One reads over and over on this board how "Third and Chavis" killed us time and again this season.

Yet, not once has anyone (that I've seen) produced some stats to verify this.

Can someone please produce stats to tell us how the LSU defense ranked in:

3rd down conversions longer than 5 yards
3rd down conversions longer than 10 yards

Thanks in advance.

Did you not watch this Defense struggle to get off the field all year long?

I remember giving up some long 3rd down conversions.

But I postulate that much of the "Third and Chavis" histeria is a self-fulfilling prophecy and not based on actual statistics.

maybe it's just me but it seemed like the inability to create any pass rush with our 4 linemen was the biggest issue giving up 3rd down conversions.

Total Plays: LSU 771 Opponents 910

That's my quick search. LSU's offense had too many 3 and outs. Then the LSU defense would let teams consistently drive the field only to toughen up in the red zone and keep them out of the end zone.

Ha, funny, I was doing the stats for this as you posted this, almost finished, will make a new thread in a second so it won't be buried.

(Preview: 3rd and Chavis as something that existed and cost us games = FALSE.)

Thanks, Tigercat!

But what will all those who love to point to the myth of "Third and Chavis" be left to at that point?

This was the problem. Our offense couldn't drive the ball. The Penn St. game was a prime example. Our defense saved our arse over and over, until the end. How many yards rushing did we have?

I seemed to not carry over the spread sheet when I upgraded to Win 7. But I had done the first 4 games this year.

Of those 4 games, IIRC, Washington we gave up an abnormal amount of 3rd and long situations. While the other three we gave up mostly 3rd and under 10. I think one of the games, we didn't give up any 3rd and over 10s. Though, like I said not sure, as I have lost the spreadsheet.

There was a thread before the season started trying to see what past Chavis defenses gave up in terms on 3rd down conversions. It turns out that all of his defenses tend to give up 36-40% of third downs. And that's right where we finished this year.

This has been stated over and over but some people refuse to accept the fact that the biggest problem for LSU's D this past season was their O. So many times the D played well for 3 quarter only to get burned out by the 4th. 2 or 3 more first downs per game would have helped the D immensely, Dline push or not. To finish 12th nationally in scoring D while playing such an ineffective offense bodes well for the future of the Chavis defense IMO. He will get guys on that Dline who can push and hurry up the QB's and hopefully recieve more help from the O in future years.

If Penn St always had a short field, thus creating points, why couldn't our defense ever give us good field position? That time we downed the punt at the two, how many first downs did PSU get before we got the ball back? That would have been a great time for a 3 and out. How bout the 7 minute game winning drive that PSU drove the length of the field? The defense allowed about 3 third down conversions on that drive alone.

So the defense gets the blame because they were so tired on the field because of the offense? Wouldn't you agree that if there were fewer 3 and outs by the anemic offense that the defense wouldn't have to work so hard. I mean let's look at this for a moment. If I gave you 10 shots to make a bucket, could you? What if I gave you twice as many? Could you make one then? I mean if our offense can't keep the ball for longer than 3 plays, how in the world is our defense supposed to keep the other offense out of the endzone if we are giving twice as many opportunities?

We had one of yhe best defenses in the country this year. most people will believe anything they read on this forum with out needing any proof. -enn state earned 10 points against our defense the rest was given to them by offensive miscues which wasnt even crowtons fault this time tho i do blame him for callingb sweeps on a wet field.

I think the scheme and his ability to adjust will bode well in the future. Better D line play will put them in the top tier. A better run game will keep them fresh.
