I honestly think Muschamp has no desire to be a head coach any time soon. He likes being a coordinator and not having to deal with the media and being the "face of the program."

No. Muschamp also officially signed the contract saying he'll be the next coach after Mac.

He isn't going anywhere.

What if a school like Texas A&M offers him a job in the next couple of years and Mack still shows no desire to retire?

Does Muschamp have one of those loopholes like Jimbo did? Be head coach by 20XX, or pay...

He might but he will be very picky. Would only leave for a upper level BCS conferance job, like a Georgia or Oklahoma.

If Miles were fired next year and we offered the job,he would take it unless Mack retires at the same time.

You would think he has to at least be looking. Something has to be going on behind the scenes for UT to think they can keep him dragging along a few years.

But, he is the coach in waiting for the #1 HC job in the country.

TexasTigah, contract aside, i don't think he waits until 2017 to take a HC gig. his contract (best of my recollection) was a lot different than jimbo fischers; there was no timetable and the buyouts were soft (either side). it almost looked like mac was just looking for a way to pay him the money they do. texas needed top defensive coaching big time as they sucked and ou was beating them every year because mac sucks at D. the title of "in waiting" might be a red herring.

Muschamp is head coach in waiting for UT for one reason only. It justifies his salary to the boosters and fans. Without Muschamp UT is in trouble. Mack and the boosters know this.

No doubt about it. Imagine your going to be the Head Coach of Texas one day, guaranteed. Muschamp would be insaine to leave Texas. You would be hard pressed to find a job better than UT.

Head Coach in waiting is the dumbest thing you can do, they had to force Bowden out to get Jimbo in.

Its a poor career choice. Also career co-ordinatior is a poor choice.

Uh no. Try again.

There are plenty of coaches that prefer to coach one side of the ball and not have to deal with the PR obligations of a bigtime HC job.

Has anyone else heard that Mack Brown was told by Darrell Royal to coach as long as he could, since Royal regrets retiring so young?

I also believe that the Mushchamp "coach in waiting" arrangement is to pacify the boosters on his large salary. Although U Texas football generates more revenue than any other program by far, thus affording high $$ assistants.
