Did anybody ever try to hire McClendon away?

Yes, I want to say that Texas A&M basically brought a Brinks truck full money to try to lure Mac away.

He was offered the HC postion at Kentucky at about the same time LSU promoted him to HC. A couple of more times when the Kentucky job came open there were rumors that they wanted him.

Before the Aggies hired Emmory Bellard,the godfather of option football, they offered Mac the job. LSU tore up his contract and he signed what was to be his last LSU contract.

In those days, SEC teams did not hire other SEC HC's. It was considered a breech of conference ethics and was not done. coaches salaries were significantly lower also and pretty close to the same. i'm not sure, but i think lsu hiring dinardo from vandy might have been a first.

Didn't Bear Bryant coach at Kentucky? Was that before he coached at A&M?

McClendon was a coordinator under Dietzel and when Paul Dietzel left for his dream job at Army (I swear he said that) they just made McClendon the coach. That's about it. Another memory is when the just retired coach of Florida State was given the unheard of raise to $800,000.00 a year and that was simply outrageous.

Cholly Mac was offered a "boatload" of cash and incentives to go to A&M. It was really a hot topic during Sun Bowl week when we played Iowa State in El Paso, Dec 18, 1971, Tigers 33 ISU 15

Coach Mac played for Coach Bryant at Kentucky. Coach Mac's name is up on the ring around the Commonwealth Stadium
