The Leper Colony in Carville, Louisiana

Does it still exist? Someone told me today it is the last one in existence in the continental USA. Any Lepers still there? I had no idea these places still existed at all but Wiki has the one in Carville listed.

It very well mught be in existence. But, I would be willing to bet a million dollars that the only reason your friend knew about it was from watching House.

That's actually exactly how they phrased it too - "last one in the continental US."

He told me there were still 15 or so living lepers there. I had never heard that before today. Just found it interesting if true is all.

National guard drills actually. He had to go to Carville for the first time this past weekend.

They have or had a nine hole golf course too. I learned to play there along time ago

Leprosy was an underrated disease, IMO

He told me that and said as long as lepers are there that the national guard/state has to maintain it for them.

Guess they were untreatable even after treatment was discovered?

I remember it being in about the same conidition of city park. It didn't have a club house just a old lady that had a bunch of golf carts in her back yard.

re: The Leper Colony in Carville, Louisiana
There was an article on this several years ago in the paper.

I think it later became known as the Gillis Long Hansen's Disease Center, and there were just a few people left living there, as many had died off, and they were relocated to make better use of the facilities (which might have included shutting it all down).

It was a shame to see it close, because it really was community.....a place for those people to call home and have a life, where the outside world could not deal with them.
