Why did we get ball on the 20 after missed FG?

I don't know if I'm drunk and missing something so this is an honest question. I even looked up Gametracker on CBS Sports to make sure we started on the 20.

Suisham missed a 23 yard FG. That means he kicked from the 13 yard line (plus the 10 yard of the end zone), right? Stats show our drive started at the 20.

We should get the ball at the spot of the missed kick - the 13 yard line. What am I missing? Is this a misprint or am I forgetting something?

It doesn't matter as far as the game goes. I'm just curious what I'm missing.

Could be that the offense has the option of the spot of the kick or a touchback since the ball went out the back of the endzone.

That would make sense - I just never knew that. I guess it really doesn't happen often!

Any ball kicked inside the 20 goes to the 20. Not sure when they changed to that rule.

According to wiki...

quote:

A special rule applies in college football and the NFL with regard to field goal attempts. If a missed field goal occurs in these leagues, where the other team receives possession of the ball depends on the spot from which the ball has been kicked. The ball will be placed either on the twenty or the line of scrimmage of the play in which the attempt was made in college football; either the twenty or the place from which the ball was kicked in the NFL. (In either case, the ball goes to the spot which is further from the goal line.

Yup, a missed FG inside the 20 is automatically placed at the 20 on the turnover.

exactly inside 20 goes to the twenty. If further out than that then it is spotted where the attempt was made.

There are as many rules in the NFL as the IRS
