Did the Bulls already do this? They should've done it right after the 1998 NBA Finals.

Stupid idea...

Honor should be for those like Jackie Robinson, hell Bill Russell is more deserving than Jordan.

Makes no sense. Retire him in Chicago, but not throughout the league. He was great just not to the point the league has to recognize him.

You do realize Russell went through more than Jordan could ever dream, won more than Jordan. If anyone deserves their number retired around the league it would be Russell. It is a shame players today do not hold him in same regard as Jordan.

It's a shame scrubs such as those wear the jersey of a NBA legend. Players today were born and raised during the Jordan years therefore they know about him. Many do not know what those before Jordan did for the game and how they had more impact on stuff other than endorsement deals like Jordan.

Didn't Russell just get the finals MVP trophy named after him? That's a nice honor for him there. As far as retiring a number league-wide, I'd say that Russell should be first in line but I don't really see it happening and I really don't care if it does.

to my knowledge(because I am too lazy to look shite up), Mike's # is retired by the Bulls and Heat. The Heat retired Marino's 13 as well .

Okay, I lied. I looked up all the teams with 23 retired and came up with:
(Team-player who wore 23)
Atlanta Hawks-Lou Hodson
Boston Celtics-Frank Ramsey
Chicago Bulls-Michael Jordan
Houston Rockets-Cal Murphy
Miami Heat-honorary retirement for Michael Jordan
New Jersey Nets-John Williamson
Washington Wizards-may have retired Jordan's jersey

Current Players wearing #23:
Toney Douglass-New York Knicks
Lou Williams-Philadelphia 76ers
LeBron James-Cleveland Cavs
Jodie Meeks-Milwaukee Bucks
Stephen Graham-Charlotte Bobcats
Kevin Martin-Sacramento Kings
Jason Richardson-Phoenix Suns
Marcus Camby-LA Clippers
CJ Watson-Golden State Warriors
Wes Matthews-Utah Jazz
Byron Mullens-OK Thunder
Martell Webster-Portland Blazers
Downtown Devin Brown-New Orleans Hornets

would be better than the team of #6's, but some of the worst players in the NBA wear the number as well

So would teams that retired #23 in honor of a different player have to then re-retire the number in honor of Jordan

The league shouldn't retire his number. He has done very little in community service and his front office work has been atrocious at two teams. He was one of the greatest of all time as a player, but as an overall role model poor considering his status.

Reserving a number league wide is an honor very few deserve

I think the greatest athlete in the history of American professional sports meets that criteria.

Athletes should be judged on their athletic prowess-MVP's, championships, scoring titles, and awards as such. They don't owe anything else, they're paid to play to the best of their ability, and undoubtedly, Jordan did this night in and night out. They don't owe the community a damn thing, like I said they're paid to produce on the field, court etc... Community service, and chartiable giving is just extra, it is not owed. Now if they decide, not to be chartiable or help the community does that make them a bad person....maybe, but it shouldn't effect their athletic accomplishments. Athletes aren't role models.

He can thank Nike for that moniker, I may be in minority but I think Wilt is still the greatest.
