But is lsu recruting enough defensive linemen?
I know we have 3 dl in this class.. last couple of years we recuited lots good athletes and DB . We are thin on the dl this year and there is dropoff from previous years
Should next year's class be heavy on the dl?

We were very heavy on the DL last year.

We are thin at DT right now because of attrition and DL's switching to the OL, but I think our depth problem is way overblown.

Downs will be a 4 year contributor, Davenport should see significant playing time next year and Brockers will be a beast as well.

Its a down year for DT this year. We should be fortunate we stole a good one out of Cali. Next year we have Johnson and Hunter in Louisiana for the DT position.

We took 6 on the DL last year. 1-5 star, 4-4 star, & 1-3 star (scout).
We'll take a couple this year and then load up again next year.
Our depth is fine.

I agree depth is great at LSU right now on both sides..

If there is only one thing i worry about is not enough true Olineman. This year Washington and Hardrick are those types... Everyone else from Porter, Fordham, and i believe Marsh eventually is moved. Guessing thats just miles philosophy. I said on here before after meeting saban several years ago (recruiting a LB) while recruiting a player of mine. He always stated you take the best ten bigs on the board regardless where they project. He was lucky he got what he wanted from his board, and had true olineman and true dlineman..Miles, is scrapping with tweeners right now besides the tackle position..still think he's doing a good job at it. Its the hardest position to evaluate.

Only a matter of time before we restore our status as defensive line U.

I would say something about Fordham but I don't want to get suspended. Marsh shouldn't move to O-line before Blackmon. Chris Faulk will be a solid O-lineman and we have plenty of guys from the last few classes that can play.

well I see the OL recruiting situation this year as below average for an elite program. fordham may never pan out as an OL, Hardrick is JC guy with 2 years to play. only true OL for the future is Washington and he is in only his 2nd year of football. not a good situation.

No offense, but what is the basis of this assumption?

That's the thing though. It's really hard to grade out O-linemen so a lot of the top programs just take big guys and hope they become good. That's why there arent many O-linemen at the top of any recruiting boards because they can be really hit and miss. It's all about how you develop them.

It would be nice if you could make trades in college football and we could trade some of our surplus athletes for O-linemen that turn out to be good, but when they're a senior in high school it's hard to tell how they'll play in college.

I hate to say it, but it is true, our OLINE has gone down hill each of the last 3 years Coach Stud has been here.

it not just the OL. it the recruits we get at the OL position. ex. I don't think we have gotten a scout 100 OL in LM tenure at LSU.

our OL coach is not a good OL recruiter and we don't put as many Ol in pros as we do WR or DL.

thats the problem, not just coaching (thats the second problem)

Chris Faulk was one of the top Oline recruits in the country last year.

Faulk was rated in the 200s on scout last year.

I disagree and for two reasons. First, in the SEC, it's hard for any offensive line to dominate because of all the athletes on defense and you never see anybody's offensive line "dominate" every team. Second, I think we had one of our best offensive lines last year, that was more than likely because of two 5th year Senior's in the middle with Herm & Helms, not to mention Quinn Johnson anchoring it. This year we have two guys who have only played in seven games and a FB who has only played a dozen or so snaps. This line is disappointing to say the least, but I wouldn't say it's been a steady decline or anything.

He was ranked 47 on Rivals, what's your point?

Jason Smith, #2 overall draft pick last year was a 2* Not Ranked Offensive tackle when he went to Baylor. Conversely LSU's top OL recruit that year was Ryan Miller at the #8 OL recruit overall.

First, I hope Faulk becomes a "great" player but as of now all we know about is the rankings (he was ranked 76 out of possible 100-ESPN, thats low). my point is that he (and no other OL in LM era) was not consistently ranked high., compared to other positions like DL (davenport, downs , montgomery, and brockers all were ranked higher if you averaged the 3 rankings (rivals, scout, ESPN). the OL guys we get are not as talented as the DL, WR, RB etc.

And my point is that it doesn't really matter what an offensive lineman is ranked coming out of high school because there's no way to really measure who will be good and who won't. Their 40 time? Bench Press? None of that matters. It's all about how well they learn technique and footwork.

See my example above. Ciron Black was barely a 4 star OT according to scout, #31 in the country and he's been our best lineman the last 3 years. It's ok to focus on WR rankings, and QB rankings, and hell even RB rankings most of the time, but a greater percent of 5* OLinemen don't pan out compared to any other positions, and a greater percent of 2 and 3 star OLinemen become first round draft picks compared to any other position.

point taken - fair enough, but I still think we lack the same level of talent in the OL.
