WTF? I guess he had to add a gimme category so Gaynesville wouldn't look so bad, lol.

Read this yesterday. I agree with most but I think the writer must have run into some good fortunes in BR when he said "not many cities in the US can beat BR"...I can think of a handfull or six. Don't get me wrong, I love Baton Rouge but I don't have enough time to begin naming off our backasswards way of doing things.

What does everyone do when the 40K plus students return home for breaks, the summer, etc?

That place has to feel like a really amusing ghost town then, right?

Actually, still a large population year round. The medical center is huge and employs quite a number of people. It's not as bad as you think. I haven't been to BR in a LONG time, but it was a real ghost town (around campus) in the summer.

Gainesville? Named for a U.S. military commander who chased Seminoles in Florida and had funny hair.

According to that article, Gainesville has 95K people. Metro BR (and I don't think Gville has a "metro" area) has appx 750K people so taking out 30K in a small portion of the area isn't that big of a deal.

But taking out appx. 45K students from a 95K population would definitely make the town lose a lot of life. I would know, one of the times I visited Gainesville for almost a week was during a period where student were out of summer school and all home before the fall semester began.

Maybe that is why it is ranked so high. All the Gator students leave for 4 months! Hasta make it better.

Considering Mike is locked up and real gators run free outside both towns, the edge goes to Florida.

Sure, let's see what happens when we let Mike loose...

I have to give it to them though. Satchel's is damn good pizza.

Gainsville is a college town and BR is actually a city. Hard to compare the two.

I've lived in both places, am a die-hard LSU fan (wearing my gear to work at UF and flying my flag in my office - still do at USCe) and I would hands down rather live in Gainesville. It is a great little college town with a very nice quality of life, Gators be damned - and it is great when the students are gone.

Ocala is just one of Gainesville's many bustling suburbs. Palatka and Starke are also fine suburbs which help form the Greater Gainesville Metropolitan.
