OK, it appears we are in on 5 possibilities:

Richard Ash - Apparently there is a very good chance this guy could end up a Tiger. Everything points to LSU and USC as his favorites. Some SC guys have told me he does not have a committable offer as the Trojan staff continues to evaluate his performance this year while checking out other prospects. If he does not get the chance to go to SC, he could likely end up at LSU. People here have mentioned that he does not have a quick first step off the line. Still, he appears to do well once he gets up and going. He looks very strong. He uses his hands really well to shed blockers. He has good technique, instincts, and closing speed. I would not mind having him on board.

Cassius Marsh - I think this guy's stock could climb. He has great size at around 6'3" 275 lbs but his coach says he has gotten larger and is really around 6'4" 290 lbs. He is quick and has great movement for his size while also showing good technique at shedding blocks. He has performed well against elite competition while being double-teamed most of the time. He is scheduled to visit LSU for the Florida game and will also visit Oklahoma, Arizona State, and Cal (from whom he decommitted). He says he will make his commitment based upon these visits. UCLA also has an outside chance of signing him. He wants to play for a high profile school known for sending D-linemen to the NFL.

Byran Jones - This guy is huge at around 6'3" 300 lbs. He is a wide body in the middle. Moreover, he has a great burst off the line. He gets up and moving very quickly but does not run very well. He does his damage within the first few seconds of the play. He is very strong, perhaps the strongest of the guys we are considering. He has offers from schools like Arkansas, Oklahoma, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State. He says he really likes LSU but does not seem to make an effort to attend camps or visits. I don't know if he is aloof or just says he really likes LSU while also being just fine with the offers he already holds. I think he is someone worth pursuing.

Bryon Bennett - I don't know much about this guy.

J.R. Ferguson - Listed as a DE but has all the ability to play inside; not sure if he has a preference or how that will factor into his decision. This guy is a freak and it would be great if we could land him. He has great size at around 6'4" 275 lbs and is a tremendously gifted athlete. Without a doubt, he is on a different level from the other guys listed. He completely dominated his high school years and has been considered a phenom since he was a 6'2" 225 lb 14-year-old. He has the total package of size, strength, technique, speed, and instincts. He says he is wide open but is known to really like North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Maryland. He also visited USC and said he was very impressed.

What do you guys think about these prospects? Who would you like to sign (if any)? Who do you think is most likely to sign (if any)? I would not mind signing two of them.

I really believe we need to sign 2 of these guys...

Frankly our DT have been terrible the past two years. However guys like Downs and Davenport have shown great promise in practice and Downs getting some PT as a true freshman for a coach who hates playing true freshman.

Akiem Hicks will never play here.

Nevis, Davenport and Downs are good and very solid, but who do we have after that ? Very slim up front right now.

Problem is that 2 of those fall guys will be moved to OL under Miles. That is the problem with our DL now. Blackwell and Barksdale 2 top 5 DLmen were moved. Now I do know that Blackwell expected to be moved.

My point is its Ok if you move a kid to OL. But if he does not play like Blackwell and we have dept problems on the DL it doesnt help in recruiting these kids.

The fact that Chris Davenport has #50 could be lack of #s on the team left but scares the hell out of me that he could move too.

Chris Davenport ain't moving from DT...

He was ahead of Downs on the depth chart but got hur in the fall and Downs jumped him.

The plan the whole time was for one to play and for another to Redshirt.

I have also heard that Hicks has been a terrible disappointment. Do you know why?

I know Ash hasn't gotten rave reviews but he's a Muck kid. Those guys almost universally do awesome in college ball.

All I know is that he had an ankle injury and then got the flu. I heard he was doing a decent job before that but who knows.

Saw him last year. Impressed! Will watch again Friday night. The problem with his HS is their classification and competition. I wonder if he will be like Woods...good against class A and AA teams.
Will let you know after Friday.

I have been to a few of Madison Central's games this year. I will keep an eye on Bryon the next time I go. I had no idea that he had a shot at coming to LSU. That's great to hear.

I don't know much about evaluating prospects but I will give it a shot and report back to the board after I watch him play again.

Madison Central, #1 ranked team in MS, played at Clinton HS (#8 ranked team in MS) last Friday night. The game was the first ever televised game in the "Yall vs Us" series in MS. Both teams were undefeated going into the game. That's just a little back story to tell you how big of a game it was.

Bryon Bennett, Madison Central's d tackle, had 8 quarterback hurries, 4 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble in MC's 24-3 victory. Needless to say, he performed really well in the biggest game of the season thus far for Madison Central. IMO, up to this point in the season, he has actually out shined his defensive line counterpart, Dandy Dozen preseason pick Carlton Martin.

I will keep an eye on his stats and post them as well as my view of his performance in future games.

Everyone knew Barksdale was going to be moved as well. The only reason we did that is because of the lack of depth on the OL. That has been fixed in the past two years, so I don't see a lot of other transfers from DL to OL in the future.

Thanks; always informative to get some first hand impressions to share on the board. Some suggestions on what to look for when watching Bennett (or any DT) play could include:

Burst/First Step/Explosion; how quick is he up off the line?

Arms/Hands; a good DT will use his arms and his hands to keep from getting wired to an OL; how long are his arms? a DT with big long arms (wingspan) can use them not only to keep an OL at arm's length but can be more adept at swatting down passes.

Movement; after he shoots up off the line, how does he move? quick and sound lateral movement is critical to stuffing running plays; a good DT needs to be able to shed his block and move well to each side to make a play.

Strength; is he driving the OL back? is he dictating the play in the trenches?

Opposition; its important to judge a DT's performance against the caliber of opposition; is he being double teamed a lot? does the OL facing off against him weigh 180 lbs or is he a legitimate, big OL? how good is the overall opposing team?

Running; how well does he run? generally, this is somewhat of an afterthought with DTs and more a concern with DEs and LBs but it is good if, once a DT breaks through the line and chases after a QB or RB that he be able to run relatively well.

Motor; does he go flat out on every play? is he still going hard looking to make a play even though the point of action may be across the field? does he appear to take a play off every now and then?

These are some suggestions that you may already know about; just thought I would throw them out there.
