Tamiflu & an antibiotic

I know they're not the same thing. Can you take them at the same time?

Yes, because that is definitely enough info to answer that question even if someone reading was qualified to do so.

Better question is why would you want to?

re: Tamiflu & an antibiotic

Wife was already taking an antibiotic prescribed by dr.

Now daughter has tested positive for the flu. Wife wants to know if you can take both at the same time. Dr. won't answer the question over the phone (wants another office visit).

Still haven't given the info needed.

Clue: Bad drug interactions don't care why you took both pills.

Either they are compatible or they are not.

EDIT: If your question is rooted in the wife wanting to share Tamiflu with the daughter so she doesn't get sick, the answer is a flat out no. I don't give a frick if the drugs are compatible, you don't do that shite. Go to the doc and see if he is willing to give a prophylactic dose.

So if wife had UTI was on a course of antibiotics, daughter gets H1N1 and doctor perscribes family Tamiflu still no reason to take both?

Let me preface this by saying I'm not a Doctor, but all of this info is from reputable sources.

The only drug interactions involving tamiflu are that it might lower the efficacy of the flu vaccine (I dont know why you would be taking them at the same time)

BUT

Tamiflu only works if you start it in a very short window of time (within 40 hrs of onset of symptoms), so if your wife had the symptoms first, its probably too late for it to be effective. Also, your daughter needs to take the entire series.

also, depending on how old your daughter is, the dosage is probably different

The antibio is amoxycillin. She's taking it for a sinus infection.

Not what we're doing. It's that the wife wants to know if she can take both at the same time.

The daughter has a prescription for Tamiflu suspension (mixed in liquid). Very hard to find. Had to drive to small town 1 hour away to find a pharmacy that had a bottle. Local pharms say the suspension won't be restocked until December.

Well she is probably on only a 3 day course for the UTI. Anyway in this case it's OK. If my daughter had the H1N1 I'd have the whole house on Tamiflu.

It is not recommended by the CDC or DHH to take Tamiflu as a precaution for being exposed to H1N1if you are otherwise healthy.
If you have an underlying illness such as asthma or other chronic condition that makes you immunosuppressed, your MD may want to treat you with Tamiflu. Also, if you are pregnant, check with your OB. Mine said she would prescribe Tamiflu at the first sign of symptoms.
Taking Tamiflu without actually having the flu virus can cause resistance to the drug. Not to mention that the drug is already overprescribed and people who really need can't get it!

There is no clinicall evidence to back the use of using tamiflu prophylactically. Doing so has only been proven to build drug resistant strains of viruses. If your wife does develop symptoms of flu, it is 99% probably h1n1. If she has no underlying medical condition, she should get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, take Tylenol and motrin for fever, and treat oher symptoms as they arise. H1n1 has a much lower mortality rate than seasonal flu. She should be just fine.
