It appeared to me last nite during the 1st half that LSU's option formation worked very well, especially early, when we had a split-out sprinting back across the line in motion, thus creating a bit more confusion for Vandy's defense....somewhat similar to what Houston ran yesterday very effectively against Okie State. It looked like we got away from that completely in the 2nd half, and the offense looked stagnant (not taking away the fact that the rain did get worse during the 3rd quarter).

If we're going to run that formation, I think we need to run it more wide-open like UH. Otherwise, it appears plain vanilla to me. Personally, I hate not seeing us run more out the I formation, especially on 1st down and give the opposing defenses multiple looks, and/or at least mix it up more. Scott has no run support in this formation, so you're essentially telling the opposition that "we may run against you", but it's more our tendency to "tease you" with an occassional run.....if we had a great arm at QB and a more vertical passing game, I'd say "OK" with that, but it doesn't appear that we do.

on half the option plays JJ could have handed the ball off to the back.... no spacing between the QB and RB and JJ needs to attack a little more instead of stretching the play out all the way to the sideline

Yeah, it didn't result in big plays, but I think they're using this motion-option with LaFell to set up a playaction out of that set in a future 2nd and short situation.

To be fair, Jefferson has an absolute cannon. At least in the Vandy game, there were a few token deep passes. Protection has to be better, and Jefferson hasn't been asked to make those throws in the past, so it'll take some time.

I agree with that.

One point on JJ's obvious inexperience and perhaps lack of confidence in throwing the deep ball - what JJ lacks in confidence, I beleive Lafell, Tolliver, and possibly Randle could make up in talent and/or experience and confidence. For LSU to be a much better team, it will need to open up the deep ball, otherwise there is even less chance that a decent running game will emerge. Even if it takes throwing a few "jump balls" to Lafell and Tolliver, it has a good chance of going for a big gain or getting a flag thrown against a shorter DB dring to defend. Perhaps the occassional pick 6, but I like the odds. Otherwise, we're plain vanilla.

The Vandy game, despite the poor throws by JJ, showed how much it loosened up the defense. On a dry field against tougher DLines this may our best and only chance for "big plays". Then, maybe Scott and Keiland can really go to work with inside/outside running.
