Magnalite pots

Just bought some magnalite pots. THe roaster has a "rough" finish inside while the other pots are smooth. Is this the way they are supposed to be?

re: Magnalite pots

All new Magnalite Pots are made in China. The original factory in Sidney, Ohio has been closed for some years. Someone bought the name and is now getting them produced in China. The current quality cannot come close to the original. If you want the "real thing" go to Ebay or garage sales.

Yeah, noticed that they were made in China. Not nearly as heavy as the old ones.

forget the magnalite and get some Mcware pots made in Mamou, La.

exact replica of the old Magnalite line.

I know Vernon's hardware carries them as well as a few other hardware store around.

You can get the new ones at Walmart. That should tell you something. I've got the originals my mom handed down to me from back in the day. they are still great.

re: Magnalite pots

If your in Baton Rouge there is a guy in a resale shop on North Sherwood Forest "Finders Keepers" that has a great selection of the Mcware pots and his prices are the best I've seen.

Compare them to magnalite and I think you'll be impressed with the priced compared to magnalite.

Thought there was some concern awhile back about Magnalite use causing memory loss, but I forget what conclusion they came to.

I bought a big set from sam's last year and they cook like a champ. Never had one problem with them. Oh, and the inside was a little rough until I used it a couple times.

re: Magnalite pots

Are the Mcware pots really as good as the magnalite brand? How do they vary in price?

Well that all depends which magnalite you got.
The Magnalite sold at wall-mart ain't your mama's Magnalite.

The whole story :

LNK
I'M CONFUSED! HOW MANY MAGNALITES ARE THERE?

Magnalite Professional GHC....Magnalite Professional.....Wagner Ware Magnalite.....Magnalite Country Collection.....Magnalite Classic?

A. The first product was Magnalite by Wagner Ware. It was Aluminum cookware without any anodization. Immensely popular and quite readily available on eBay at reasonable prices. Quality cookware but without the added benefits of the later anodized Magnalite Professional. Prone to scratching and pitting if not well cared for.

B. Next came Magnalite Professional. Some of the pieces were identical in shape to the earlier Wagner Ware pieces but Mag Pro was Anodized and all the pieces had heavy riveted handles instead of cast handles.

C. Magnalite Professional GHC. Same product as "B" with the exception of an added "GHC" stamping to indicate General Housewares Corporation's purchase of the Magnalite line from Wagner Ware. I also believe there was a small period of time when the Magnalite Professional line was owned by Chicago Cutlery but the pieces were never marked as such.

D. Magnalite Country Collection. Many of the pieces were similar in appearance to Magnalite by Wagner Ware. They were not Anodized and they Wooden Knobs. I am unsure who actually produced this line.

E. Magnalite Classic. This is tricky. Magnalite Classic is a recent attempt to duplicate Wagner Ware Magnalite. I believe this line was re-introduced by former Wagner employees in the US for a limited time but all the current pieces are being produced in China. All of the model numbers are identical to the former Wagner Ware products but the Chinese products are clearly marked "Made In China".

re: Magnalite pots

I own 5 Magnalites I got many years ago and the Mcware looks feels and even smells the same. I cant tell the differance..except is has Mamou,La stamped across the bottom.

Not to mention two differant companies now make Magnalites.

The original company who quit making them years ago

The Made in China Magnalite by the company formerly known as Corning.

And Mcware
Which just might be made in China too for all I know.

re: Magnalite pots

What everyone is really concerned about is Magnalite Classic. I was in the retail side of the cookware industry 20 years back in the 70's & 80's. The original Magnailte Cookware was made by Wagnerware that had a factory in Sidney, Ohio. In the 1960's Wagnerware was bought out by a company called General Housewares Corp. based in Terre Haute, IN. GHC did not change anything on Magnalite except they took off the backstamp of "Wagnerware" and made their own backstamp of "GHC." The cookware was still made in the original factory in Sidney, Ohio. I personally visited this factory and saw the actual production of Magnalite Cookware. The molten aluminum was actually hand pored into the molds and hand polished into the finished product.

GHC then came out with Mag Pro, a more "upscale" product with an anodized look. When this came out the original Magnalite cookware became "Classic Magnalite" to distinguish it from the new Mag Pro line. Over the years General Housewares Corp (GHC) purchased other housewares lines including Chicago Cutlery.

GHC finally went out of business and the Magnalite factory in Ohio was closed. Many companies tried to resurect the line and also tried to duplicate it. Finally a company bought the name Magnalite Classic and starting producing it in China. I believe it is exclusive to Wal-Mart and Sams at this time.

Back in it's heyday in the 70's and 80's over 60 percent of the entire production of Magnalite was sold in South Louisiana. One of the best sellers were the various oval roasters. We not only use them for roasting but also for large gumbo and jambalaya pots.

Magnalites are best handed down. Happy to say the one thing I claimed when my grandma passed was her Magnalite gumbo pot. Everytime I use it I think of all the Christmases she served seafood gumbo for the family from this same pot.
