Catholic High's Cajun Cannon; catch results from Thursday's action, previews for tonight's matchups - The Advertiser (9/18/09)
Taylor Bullock's rocket right arm has team off to quick start
- The Panthers were coming off a disappointing 2-7 season in 2008, but they did have a huge building block in senior quarterback Taylor Bullock.
- So [head coach Craig] Brodie and [new offensive assistant coach Tucker] Lewis decided to build the offense around Bullock's rocket right arm.
- The results early in 2009 have been impressive as the Panthers are off to a 2-0 start with two blowout wins heading into a home showdown at 7 tonight at Panther Stadium with the St. Louis Saints.
- "I think when the colleges started showing interest in him, he started realizing that he's pretty good," coach Brodie said. "He's really grown into his role. His dad is a Methodist minister in town and he was almost too nice of a kid. He never wanted to step on too many toes. He realizes now how important his role is."
- "With four and sometimes five wide receivers, somebody's open on every play as long as the offensive line protects, and our offensive line has been doing a great job," said Bullock, who committed to Tulane during the summer.

Tulane gains commits from Catholic-New Iberia QB Taylor Bullock, Texas WR Brent Comardelle - Times-Picayune
- Bullock projects as a full qualifier academically with a 24 on the ACT and a 3.4 grade-point-average.
- Bullock was a first-team All-District 6-3A selection at quarterback as a junior, who participated in the Tulane High School Football Camp held at St. Thomas More in Lafayette on June 18.
- “The kid has got a cannon for an arm. He’s got everything you need to be successful. He’s 6-2, 210, he runs 4.5 in the 40. What’s good about Taylor is that can do both (run and pass). He can follow his reads and run it, but his strength definitely is his passing. We do a lot of stuff with him like Florida does with (Tim) Tebow. (Bullock) ran for 10 touchdowns last year, a lot of it on quarterback keeps and counters around the goal line. He’s fast, but he’s got a lot of power. He’s not afraid to hit people.’’[Catholic Coach Craig Brodie said.]

- Comardelle, 6-feet, 180 pounds, with 4.47 speed in the 40, took a week to finalize his selection after receiving the Wave’s scholarship offer on June 22. That was two days after he participated in the Tulane High School Football Camp conducted at the school’s uptown Westfeldt Practice Facility.
- Tulane was the first and only school that has offered Comardelle, he said, but Rice, TCU, SMU and Baylor were among those expressing strongest interest from the 40 programs to contact him. Tulane coaches project him as a receiver capable of playing in the slot or outside.
- Comardelle is fully qualified academically with a 3.5 grade-point-average and a 1,400 on the SAT, a test he plans on retaking.
- In addition to his 40 speed and a 100-meter time of 10.9 seconds, Comardelle also boasts a vertical jump of 34 inches to go with a bench press of 255 pounds and a squat of 355. Clear Creek competes in Class 5A, Texas’ highest classification.

Green Wave nets two more commitments - neworleans.com
- Catholic of New Iberia quarterback Taylor Bullock...Bullock (6-2, 210) will start at Tulane as a quarterback despite playing both under center and as a defensive back in high school.
- Also recruited by ULL, ULM, LA Tech, Rice and SMU. All four state schools mentioned offered scholarships.

- Texas prep wide receiver Brent Comardelle...Comardelle (6-0, 180) out of Clear Creek High School in League City, TX, has been timed under 4.5 in the forty. According to Rivals.com, he bench presses 255 pounds, squats 335 pounds and has a 34 inch vertical.
- Tulane was the only known school to offer Comardelle, who was also looked at by Baylor, Boise State, Colorado, Nebraska, Rice, Stanford and TCU.

[Photo of Wildcats’ receiver Brent Comardelle - The Galveston County Daily News]
- Despite the injury, Comardelle still was receiving interest from several colleges, including Tulane, Stanford, Rice and Houston. Comardelle sped up his recovery in time to be ready for offseason college camps. He’d already regained his speed by the spring, running the 40 in 4.4 seconds.
- Comardelle attended a Tulane camp in June and two days later, the Green Wave coaching staff offered him a scholarship. Being a native of the New Orleans area, Comardelle was quick to accept the offer.

Baton Rouge running back Jamar Thomas commits to Tulane - Times-Picayune
- Thomas, Tulane’s sixth in-state commitment, was recruited by assistant coaches Greg Davis Jr. and Greg Jackson and projects as a full academic qualifier.

He made unofficial visits to SMU and Texas A&M and participated in SMU’s football camp. Thomas also participated in the Tulane High School Football Camp staged at Memorial Stadium in Baton Rouge on June 18. Tulane’s official offer came two days later.
- “When he runs, he reminds me of (former LSU and Indianapolis Colts No. 1 draft pick) Joseph Addai,’’ Shoptaugh said. “He’s not a dancer. He’s a one-cut back. He’s a complete football player in that he’s not only a great runner, he also is an outstanding receiver. He runs good routes, He catches the ball well. He’s a good blocker.
...Tulane coaches project Thomas as a running back.
- Thomas also has started three years in basketball as a shooting guard and earned first-team All-District honors twice. In track, he was a member of U-High’s state championship-winning 1,600-meter relay team. Good stuff Sidis. I knew there was a reason I stayed on TD.com

Thanks TulaneUVA...
...I thought the topic needed a fresh post due to the upcoming season and the exciting '10 recruiting by Toledo and his staff.
As always, we'll see if fellow Tulane fans, LSU fans, fans of Louisiana football, etc. take interest.

***Tulane Football's 12th 2010 Commitment***

...Florida linebacker Kerchal Byrd, Jr. commit to Tulane football - Times-Picayune
- ...project as full academic qualifiers.
- Tulane coaches project Byrd, 6-1, 220, with 4.62 speed in the 40, as an outside linebacker and edge rusher.
- “I’m more of a pass rusher,’’ Byrd said. “I like to rush from the outside. (Tulane’s coaches) said they needed speed. I see myself as a good fit.’’
- Byrd is preparing for his second season as a starter at Palmetto as a standup defensive end. Palmetto is a Class 4A school located on Florida’s gulf coast.
- Tulane represented the first official scholarship offer for both players, although Stanford, Wake Forest and Western Kentucky were recruiting Byrd...

Palmetto’s Byrd verbally commits to Tulane - Bradenton Herald
- Last season, Byrd helped anchor a strong Tigers defense, totaling 39 tackles, 14.5 sacks and four tackles for a loss.
- For the Green Wave, Byrd said he’ll more than likely play linebacker.
- “I like playing defensive end and linebacker, now,” he said. “I like to hit people.”
- “Kerchal’s motor runs, and it never stops,” Woodie said. “Everything that we teach him on that chalkboard, he understands it inside and out. He’s the type of player you definitely want on your team.”
- Getting acquainted with professors is intriguing to Byrd, being that he owns a 3.8 GPA and is leaning toward majoring in mechanical engineering or business.
- Stanford, Wake Forest and Western Kentucky were also recruiting Byrd, but the 6-foot-1, 220-pound rising senior said Tulane felt more comfortable.
