There are traps all over the place. Just go empty a few. It's a lot easier.

And they are usually pretty understanding if you get caught. No big deal really.

Quite a few people get the shite beaten out of them for doing that shite down here. The recreational limit is 144 crabs per person and only a fishing license FW and Sw is required for hand lines and nets. If you buy wire traps you need a $15 gear license and you have to crimp your license number on each trap max of 10 traps for recreational permit.

"Any person using crab nets or crab lines for the purpose of taking crabs for recreational purposes shall not be required to purchase or possess a basic recreational fishing license or be required to purchase a gear license. However, persons using crab nets or crab lines on LDWF WMA or refuges must possess a basic and saltwater recreational fishing license or a Wild Louisiana Stamp."

Thanks for the link.

you do not need a license unless you are on a reserve according to this paragraph in the rules.

re: Do I need a fishing license to go crabbing?

Yeah it seems kind of odd that you only need a license on a reserve or wma. Pretty much the only thing you can still do without a license hell even a cane pole needs a license now. I got the gear license this year and run 5 wire traps at the camp. I let them soak for 24hrs then have enough to boil for the family. Cost was $15 for the license and $170 for the traps but have paid for themselves in only 3 uses. Crabs are pretty damn expensive to buy these days.
