When your outside A/C unit freezes up...

Should you get a repair man out?

Mine did last night, I left it off all night and it thawed out fine. When I turned it back on this morning it seemed to be working fine.

I know knowing about A/C's....anyone have any knowledge?

i've only had it happen once, and it was too much water in the pan. so now i can check that, but if the pan isn't full, i'd call one

only that it will happen again if you don't insulate it

It's low on refrigerant.

I wouldn't worry about it.

that will shut off a compressor but not ice it up

That's what I was thinking... I'll probably just call the guy to come check it out

same thing happened to me two months ago. Probably low on refrigerant.

Careful that they dont "find" a leak in your coil.

+1

There should never be any water in the pan. Water in the pan means the main drain line isn't working properly.

If it was your inside unit freezing up I would say it's either low on freon or dirty evaporator core but to tell you the truth I've never seen an outside condenser core freeze.

and a little cleaning + a little clorox will usually clear it

If its low on freon then there is a leak.

The part the froze is the pipes where it enters the house. The unit was still running, but no air was blowing inside.

mine did the same thing this year. I'm not worried about it - but the unit is 20+ years old so every day it still works I consider lagniappe. If you have a newer model, it's well worth paying $100 to have it serviced every year.

AAAAHHH... in that case it froze up because the air wasn't blowing inside (that heats up the coils with the hot air from your house blowing over them). The root cause of your problem is that the fan wasn't blowing,,, the outside unit freezing up was a side effect of that.

If that little tube going into your unit outside is frozen (white), turn your AC off and turn the fan ON.

Like they said above, the line is probably clogged. Call a repair man to clear it out, unless you know what to do.

Your pan can fill up, and if it is above a ceiling it can overflow and cause a lot of damage.
