This has probably been hashed and rehashed, but I believe LSU's band is much better than Southern's, moving your suzaphone up and down while playing and high stepping like you really have to pee doesn't make you talented.

Is there some sort of group that ranks marching bands?

USC's sucks worse, apparently planting a sword and putting two fingers up makes you amazing.... one word, boo.

PS: This was brought about by two people at work trying to tell me the style automatically makes SU's band better than LSU's.

Yes I agree with you. I also agree that Vanilla Ice is a better rapper than 50 cent or Lil Wayne.

I find Southern's band to be much more entertaining. But from a musical and technical standpoint LSU is superior. While I might have a heart attack if LSU mimicked Southern, I would rather watch Southern's band play if it was a neutral setting.

That sums it up pretty well.

Musically, technically, etc...LSU blows Southern away.

Does Southern play loud? Yes.
Does Southern dance aroundand get the crowd into it? Yes.
Does Southern 'put on a show' that most fans like to see? Oddly enough, yes.

Just because their style is different doesn't make them better. It might make them more appealing...but certainly not better.

In 1970 ABC sponsored a competition for the "All American College Marching Band". My brother was in Tiger Band at the time, and LSU won it. I was 2 years away from being in the band at that time. The 1970 competition was the only one held, so LSU was the only winner ever.........

Were the two people you work with black? That could make a difference in their opinion. Just saying.

If that comment is racist then too bad, its also true.

Amazing..absolutely amazing...

This is the first time I've ever seen a rational discussion with rational, intelligent answers about this topic on the Rant.

FWIW - Tiger Band technical and musical execution far superior

Southern, while entertaining (to some...not all...) is pretty much just loud and crass.

Yes, I was in Tiger Band, however I"m not biased. Just speaking from a purely musical perspective here.

WRONG! You all are so quickly to forget. Don't you remember last years "Battle of the Bands" put on by ESPN?

P.s. HINT: Golden Girls in Indiana jones costumes with whips.

I was a student at LSU when LSU won that award in '70. The award went to the best band appearing at games on TV. During the competition, Ole Miss band put on one hell of a show in Tiger stadium. The band's theme was POPEYE the Sailor. Their show was awesome as well as the game. We beat broken arm Archie 69 to 17. Those were the good old days.

All I know is..when I'm in a crowd of 92,000+ people and the Golden Band From Tiger Land comes out onto the field, I get goosebumps everytime!!!
Southern Band has never ever given me any goosebumps. Nuff said!

I think it's difficult to compare the two bands. Two completely different styles ... both good at what they do. I prefer the musicality and precision of GBFTL.
