Been hearing great things about the burger there. Took my wife and daughter in for a quick lunch about 1:30 today. As I walked in, I saw the sign on the hostess stand that said "Mason's burger featured in 50 burgers in 50 states" on food network. My mouth was watering.

As we were being seated by a server, we passed a server typing on a computer. He said - and I quote -

"Aw, don't give them to me, I don't want them. What, you don't want tables so you put them in my section?" and then called her a name.

He then walked over to a third server rolling silverware and recanted the story. Still within eyesight, and earshot. We're talking 5 feet here. He then disappeared around the corner.

Feeling quite embarrassed for inconveniencing this poor waiter so much, we decided to leave.
I asked for a manager on the way out, and told her my story. She replied with a half hearted "Oh I'm so sorry."

We left and went to Tremonte's right down the road and got a pretty good dang burger, so I guess everything turned out alright. I just can't believe that kids these days have such crappy work ethic and lack of customer service skills.

The place probably had 6 cars in the parking lot, you would think that a person who makes their money from tips would be happier to have customers. I would probably punch one of my employees if I heard of anything like this happening. I mean, WTF!?!

Maybe I live on a different planet.

The worst part is that I HAVE to go back because of all the good comments about the dang burger on TD.
Believe me when I say that I will be getting one to go.

Thank you for listening to my rant - I feel bad for trashing a place, and I'm sure the food/service is usually great, but I had to see if I am crazy for getting so angered by this.

Wow sorry, there is no excuse for that...I always set at the bar...as a matter of fact I have always found the best service at the bar...but I digress....they are usually falling all over themselves to welcome you, seat you and even say goodbye.

cant bang a restrnt for an employee.

i ate the cajun shrimp burger yesterday for the 1st time.....(the award winner)

it was huge, full of cheese, and had great flavor. i do like the burger....not a big fan of the restrnt itself for several reasons...but that burger is good.

i suggest not getting it to go...you will have a huge soggy pile when you get it to where you are gonna eat it......go one day with a buddy and have a beer and eat it.....

if you get it to go, i predict you will have to eat it with a fork and knife

We've had bad table service as well. The bar = no problem.

That sucks man......I have been there before (like 1 year ago) and the place was great. I think that management should have done a little more that "I'm so sorry"

I find this true all too often at other restaurants as well, maybe the folks at the bar are just better at taking care of folks.

I eat lunch at the bar so I am drinking Iced tea...but when someone is at the bar you have a captive server....plus I think the bartenders like the tips.

So True!! Never really thought of it like that.

You're absolutely correct! Like I said in the original post, I feel that this was probably a gross misrepresentation of their normal caliber. It just sucks that I drove across town specifically for this burger, and one employee can ruin a dining experience before it begins.

I appreciate the feedback on the burger not traveling well. I guess sitting at the bar it is!

Bingo.

Bartendars usually have waiting experience, get tipped out by the waiters for making their drinks.....and typically, at places like Masons at lunch....dont make much dough. This usually equals good service.

well, it's a local, family type restaurant..im sure there are less "rules" than some other places... this experience was definitely an exception....trust me, I'm a regular

ask for mike(owner) tell him what happened.
He'll take care of it.
His wife works there as well as his (i believe) sis in law ... He didnt know it, or that would not have happened.

Damn, that's pretty bad.

The inside of Mason's reminds me of a funeral home, even the freaking bar area...I've eaten their several times and just like the South of Philly, I just don't think the food is near as special as folks make it out to be.

My coolest memory of Mason's was when I stopped in there on Halloween day to get a burger & beer, and the 900 year old barmaid was decked out as a french maid.

That service is inexcusable. Mason's is definitely not a chain run by a policies & procedures manual, sometimes that is a benefit, sometimes it is a real detriment.

I have only written to restaurant owners about service issues twice, one called me with an apology and invited me back as his guest, that place is still going strong 20 years later (Mansur's). The other got defensive and argued how busy they were (for a half hour I could not find anyone to pay my bill to, so we walked out and I mailed him a check with the letter) they were only half full. He didn't last a year.

I'd be curious enough to write a note and see what happens, but that's just me.

A couple of years ago, I emailed Applebee's (yeah i know, wtf was i even doing in applebee's) about the horrible meal & service that we had at the one on Coursey....A few days later I get a call from a regional manager, who was very apologetic, but basically told me that they could barely even staff that location and just can't find any decent help..It was almost as if he were saying, don't eat there.
