Shrimp boil - about how many shrimp needed per person

I don't have a whole lot of experience boiling shrimp for a big group. About how many pounds per person should I allocate? I think about 1 pound a person is what I have heard in the past. Comments? Is that about right?

We'll have all the other stuff like corn, potatoes, mushrooms, etc for people to eat as well so that can help fill them up.

Sounds kinda low to me, although I don't have a number for you.

I'd estimate at least 3 pounds per.

1 pound would be ok for some of the ladies that don't feel like peeling. Overall if you do 2-3 pounds per person you'd be fine with some leftovers. People generally don't tear through shrimp like they do crawfish.

Plus, shrimp provide much more meat per pound of shell-on product than crawfish.

That is usually a good guess. Shrimp provied a lot more meat per pound than crawfish. If you are having a bunch of kids, you could probably even split that. Either way, if you have leftovers, you can always use them later.

I remember going to the beach a few years ago and getting a bout 4 pounds for @ 8 adults and 2 kids. We had leftovers.

Don't just boil all of them, BBQ some in the oven.

Agreed. If you've got nice head on shrimp, I'd say about a pound to a pound and a half is plenty on average, per person. Especially, with other sides.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'd rather have some leftovers than run out.

dan, will there by non-Louisiana people there? That will make a big difference in the amounts you allocate.

If you're boiling big shrimp, .5-1 pounds per would not get it done with adults.

This is, of course, assumming said boil is being held in south LA.

2 lbs per person if boild if you have vegies, crackers and dip. Should be some left over. We just fried up some 15-20 count shrimp this weekend. And we did 10 lbs for 9 adults and some kids. We had 4 lbs of french fries and a pot of red beans and rice. All shrimp and fries went with a little beans left.

I just did my first "on my own" shrimp boil last week and had the same questions. I was boiling shrimp for 7 and had the usual sides (corn, potatoes, garlic, onions and sausage) included in the boil. I bought 15 pounds for 7 people ended up with almost half left over.
I'd say a pound per person if you have sides and are drinking a few beers. The guys will eat possibly a little more but a woman or two stopped after 10 shrimp.

P.S. we peeled the rest while drinking beer and enjoyed them cold the next day for lunch AND dinner.
