In what context? Are you looking to drop five dimes on VLO and check back in 2016, or are you looking to make a quick buck?

i would be looking at a 12-24 mo range investment. i have quite a few oil & gas co's on my "watch list" and noticed the significant drop today after the release of their 2nd qtr interim update. am i wrong to think that this industry will continue to climb in the coming months?

I trade mostly market futures, so I'm hesitant to advise others on individual names. I think the market takes another dive later this year. How the energy sector fares in an overall market decline is anyone's guess. Will VLO's price be higher in 2-3 years? Probably. Good luck with your decision, Skin.

If that's what you're thinking, why not buy OIL ETF?

Valero lost money because it is poorly run at the executive level. There is no excuse for losing that much money.

If you are betting on oil continuing to rise then go with a primary producer rather than a refiner. ANy of the big oil companies are fine: XOM, CVX, COP, BP. I personally like COP as their areas of influence are less volatile than the others.
