SI's Non-BCS Coaching Rankings
- I'm happy to see Coach Toledo receive some recognition for all his efforts in thoughtfully rebuilding Tulane's football program (despite not having a winning season in either of his first 2 years).
Of note:
1. Kyle Whittingham, Utah. A brilliant defensive mind who has helped build the Utes into the nation's premier non-"Big Six" program.
2. Gary Patterson, TCU. The only thing missing from his résumé is a BCS bowl. And it'll come if he stays with the Horned Frogs long enough.
3. Chris Petersen, Boise State. Unlike Houston Nutt, Dirk Koetter and Dan Hawkins, Petersen looks firmly rooted in Boise.
...
26. Bob Toledo, Tulane. Rehabbing the Green Wave has energized Toldeo.
27. Larry Fedora, Southern Miss. Smart and personable, Fedora is the total package who is on course to coach an SEC or Big 12 team.
...
37. Charlie Weatherbie, Louisiana-Monroe. He will live off that victory at Alabama in 2007 forever.
38. Derek Dooley, Louisiana Tech. He can back up his bloodlines with on-field success. This is a coach to watch.
...
42. Rickey Bustle, Louisiana-Lafayette. Bustle brings boundless energy to the job, but has been unable to deliver a breakthrough.

Dooley should be ahead of Weatherbie

I completely agree...I've maintained that Dooley has done a great job.
In fact, Dooley, due to his '08 bowl appearance, should be ranked ahead of Toledo.
That being not the case, I'm happy to see that something other than winning %, bowl appearances, etc. went into this 'ranking'.

I'v been to several Tulane games over the last few years and have been unimpressed with Toledo's coaching. He doesn't seem to want to run and gun with the other c-usa teams which is what you have to do when you don't have a defense. He was able to get away with this when he had Forte who carried the entire offense.

Toledo's
has recruited much better than Scelfo. Bob will start winning if Tulane gives him 3-4 more years IMHO

What exactly has Weatherbie done anyway that would put him ahead of Dooley?

Tech's recruiting coordinator Terry Joseph has done better in the New Orleans last season than Tulane which is saying something for people in their own backyard

Well, I didn't want this post to focus solely on Tulane's coach - but I have to disagree with you.
Toledo has attempted to lay a solid foundation for the program - on both sides of the ball.
He has done so with a complete understanding and awareness of the modern limitations faced by a program like Tulane.
He replaced former defensive coord. O'Neill Gilbert w/ Coach Stanard. Unlike most years, reports from Spring Practice indicate the D is getting it's act together.
The kids seem to really respect and enjoy playing for Toledo and he wants nothing more than to win.
As always, we'll have to wait and see...

That remains to be seen, especially when other sources say differently.

Agreed.
He had a really nice '09 recruiting class.
More importantly, he has established a new recruiting strategy - an intense focus on a select number of recruits and emphasizing recruiting in LA.
Both things Scelfo failed to do, leaving the recruiting to wander aimlessly from year to year.

New Orleans
who said anything about NOLA? Plus they have a different set of circumstances than LaTech. SInce you have not paid attention, Toledo is recruiting across the south for Tulane and has had pretty good return so far.
Im sure LaTech is doing just as well where they choose to recruit

Nothing...(other than that win versus Bama)
Dooley is certainly a rising coaching prospect.
Unlike having someone like the older Toledo (formerly at UCLA), La. Tech, assuming continued/increasing success, will unfortunately only enjoy Dooley's services for a short time before he moves on.

Who said DD is going anywhere? Where else can he get to be head football coach and athletic director?

Maybe they just don't have the players yet, but i would be generous by labeling their offense as unimaginative.
I'm hoping to see more out of them this year, ill probably be at 2-3 games this year.

There are certainly reasons for ULL fans to worry...
Despite all of the "energy", ULL's '09 recruiting class was terrible.
Unfortunately for LA football generally, ULL is struggling.
Let's hope all of our Louisiana programs succeed
(don't worry paranoid LSU fans...you'll always be #1 in LA).

Can't argue that.

Why would I be worried about ULL?

That's EXACTLY it...the first true Toledo recruits are the '09 class.
We all hope to see some real progress on the field this fall.
Even at Tulane, Toledo cannot expect to hang his hat simply on foundational changes w/o improving on the field.

Well, OK...sure.
As someone looking at LA football (and Louisiana generally) from out-of-state, I've taken a broader interest in the quality, success and national recognition of LA football.
Just one man's view.

I could care less about what happens with ULL and ULM
