Mainieri is doing well, but let's have some perspective

Despite some questionable methods this weekend, LSU baseball got the job done, doing a fantastic job to win the series. I think too many here have no sense of the past. I think we all agree that Smoke Laval was a terrible coach. Knowing this, take a look at the records he put up in SEC play:
19-10
20-9-1
18-12
18-12
13-17
Now, here's what Coach Mainieri has done thus far:
12-17-1
18-11-1
8-4
I think that Coach Mainieri has done a good job with this team, and he is a good fit for the program, but don't act like he is free from criticism. There are valid flaws he has shown in 2.5 years now, things like poor baserunning and questionable bullpen management. He has recruited fantastically well and is a good face of the program. I am very appreciative of where the program is right now compared to even two years ago, but I think it would be wise to take a step back and look at things rationally. It isn't being a negatiger or bashing anybody to suggest that Coach Mainieri is not a God of baseball.
So with that said, I hope to see this team back in Omaha again this season, and I think we definitely have the guns to bring home the hardware this time!

I can take the heat. All I'm saying is don't start to erect the guys statue quite yet, even though he clearly isn't on the hot seat.

yeah, just like les miles, his best-of-three series ON THE ROAD against the NUMBER ONE TEAM IN THE NATION should be criticized and second-guessed.
i love rantards

Yes, all of our coaches are expected to be perfect and never make questionable decisions.
Dude, we just beat #1 team in country. Go have a beer.

Great timing for this thread.

I don't think its really his fault when a kid makes a mistake on the base paths. And I think you are confusing poor baserunning with agressive baserunning. It's a style and philosophy he uses. Maybe you just don't agree with it.

Sometimes you can go for it on 4th down and come out smelling like roses. You can even do it multiple times in a row. But when you keep rolling the dice, eventually you crap out.
No one is suggesting he is a God...
but come on...12-17-1 was all Smoke Laval. He left us with absolute crap that year. If we didnt get great performances from freshman like Dean and Mitchell it would have been worse.
He's 8-4 this year..which extrapolates to 20-10...very respectable...even great. And let's not forget we've played 4 of the better teams in the SEC...USC, Ole Miss, UK, and of course the #1 team in the country..UGA.
LSU is about to play some of the weaker teams over the next few weeks....which will probably add to the 8 SEC series win streak.
What is the most SEC series that LSU has won in a row? And who was coach?
The guy is a damn fine coach...and most certainly doesnt deserve to be called an "idiot" by people with some kind of axe to grind.
I routinely question things in the game threads...like why is Shimpf swinging at the first pitch with Jmitch on 1st and nobody out. How bout give him a chance to steal 2nd. PM and the team are not perfect or above criticism...but he's won 2 National Coach of the Year awards and has put together a very strong team.
He deserves our respect...and he deserves the benefit of the doubt in most cases....especially if it comes to calling him an idiot.

i dont know about you, but i saw alot of aggressive baseball 'playing to win' out of the tigers this weekend. you wanna question every out-at-home-plate or bats swinging for the fences?
I'm not going to deify this tiger team, but I like what I saw this weekend..tigers brought that wood.

A lot of people don't realize that Smoke Laval had the most SEC wins of any coach in the conference in the time that he was here.

it's not a question of how good his decision making is. it's a question of how good he is against his peers and i'm not talking about laval. i'm talking about the ones he currently coaches against. in that regard, coach is clearly one of the best in the conference.

Actually I said we ended up getting the job done this weekend and doing well.

No, they're not, but it isn't unreasonable to recognize and discuss potential pitfalls that could come back to bite us in the arse in a must win postseason situation.

In isolated incidents? No, its not. We have shown a tendency though going back to 07 to run into outs at inopportune times. There is being aggressive and then there is base coaches sending guys and getting them hosed by several steps where they clearly didn't have a shot. Luckily we have the bats to overcome these mistakes most of the time, but it can hurt you in close games against good teams, like friday night.

There could have been more than a couple instances this season where we got thrown out by a couple steps. I can't think of many. This weekend the calls have been really close.

And yet he still managed to run the program into the ground. Pretty amazing when you consider it.

Seriously, did you really start this thread. I can appreciate objectivity, but you should take your own advice and add some perspective.
Smoke left PM with a lesser team his first year and PM has achieved more since. It takes some time to turn around a program. Id say since midway thru last season and thru this season he has shown his ability to coach.
Last year
49-19-1
(18-11-1 in the SEC)
ending with a 29-3 run. (loss in Super Reg. and 2 losses in the CWS).
Including a 16-0 run in the SEC (which includes the SEC tourny).
This year
23-8,
(8-4 SEC).
Thats 72-27 the last 2 years
(30-15-1 SEC)
*24-4 in the last 28 SEC games.*
PM is not Skip Bertman, so no he wont get a street named after him at this time. But he has the program headed back in the right direction. He's doing a great job thus far.

How come the season after Laval was fired was all Laval's fault, all his doing, but the season after Brady was fired he has nothing to do with it.

I dont remember saying that...If you can give me a link Ill certainly apologize.
But its just a fact that the cupboard was pretty bare for PM when he took over. It was pretty pathetic.

This is truly an amazing post. You took the long way around bashing the guy to avoid looking like you're bashing the guy...all the while bashing the guy.

But how much did coaching really have to do with guys like Blake Dean and Matt Clark suddenly turning impossible to get out? Obviously he and his staff get credit for identifying talent and getting it in the program, but in terms of actually instructing guys how to play the game, the HC has little to do at this level.
Here's a question, if you say PMs coaching was a big part of the streak last year, is it fair to give him some blame for guys like Gibbs and Dean and Schimpf struggling thus far?
I guess I should clarify my main point, and that is that a head coach at this level of baseball does not really have much effect on a teams success on a game to game basis. Things like setting the lineup tend to have a minimal effect on how many runs a team actually scores, and bullpen management would have to either be exceptionally good or exceptionally bad to swing a season record by more than a couple wins.
I think what Coach Mainieri should really get praised for is recruiting high level guys that will actually see campus, like Anthony Ranaudo. This is something that the last staff failed to do, and was ultimately their downfall.
