Doing a report on anabolic steriods. They didn't outright say it... but implied that the 1958 LSU football team might have been one of the first teams to use it.

No.. apparently an Army captain stationed in Germany was experimenting with ways to lift weights without hindering athletic ability (speed in particular). He hooked up with a Swiss company that started to make a steroid called Dianabol.

This Army guy was from Louisiana and introduced a "weight training" regiment to the LSU 1958 national championship team before the season.

And to respond to "Who cares?" ... Obviously a lot of people. They typically don't run stories on OTL if there isn't a large public interest. But nice try.

So even if they were taking them, they had no idea what they were back then.

To some degree that is true. They were just talking about the fact that they knew back then that it would cause severe bone damage if taken for a long period of time. But they did know they were "steroids", it just wasn't a big deal at the time.

I don't particularly care if they took them or not. But I thought it was an interesting commentary. LSU's baseball team is already known for using pretty hardcore in the 90s. Sucks to have the football team implicated too.

When they take away our 1958 national title we'll just put 1908 up in it's place. No worries.

Do we need an asterick on the National Championship banner now?

Did Sammy Sosa know what he was putting in his bat in 1998?

When they start taking away national titles for suspected steroid use, any team after the late 1970s will have to kiss its title good bye.

The only reason the story bothers me is b/c I can hear the Gumps now...

It just stinks to have that particular team linked to being the first college team to use. Again, they didn't directly say they used roids but it was clearly implied when the reporter was standing in the LSU weight room talking about the Army fella that helped bring them over.

I see what you're saying. But it wasn't an illegal or banned substance then.

Correct. But the steriods wouldn't have been in 1958.

Very true. HGH wasn't banned in baseball either but you see what public perception has been. I just hate to see any of our accomplishments belittled b/c of anything.
