DVD burned to IMovie in MacBook

I can not get the movie from my hard drive into the imovie for editing. It is my sons senior football games this year and I am trying to pull his highlights off. I can grab the file and drag it into the create new project but it will not accept it. Does anyone know what format the DVD must be in for editing for IMovie?
