The SEC rarely has been in such a precarious position as Selection Sunday nears. Only Florida, Tennessee and perhaps South Carolina currently resemble NCAA tournament teams, and each of those squads has noticeable flaws. LSU probably will finish with more than 20 victories, but much of its success has come against the country's weaker teams. Kentucky suddenly is struggling to stay in contention.

quote:

LSU [18-4 (6-1), RPI: 52, SOS: 113] The Tigers have separated themselves from the rest of the SEC West, and it's hard to imagine a division champion not making the 65-team field. But LSU might have to finish 10-6 in SEC play to feel confident about an at-large bid. The Tigers' best nonconference win came against RPI No. 91 Washington State, and nine of their 18 victories have come against foes ranked No. 200 or worse in the RPI ratings. Road victories at Ole Miss and Tennessee and a home win over South Carolina should help.

They completely contradict themselves:

(a) How is SC better off than LSU

(b) They say LSU doesn't resemble a tourney team, but then say we need to finish 10-6 to feel comfortable. So all we need to do is go 4-5 here on out and we are in? Yet, we don't resemble a tourney team?

The entire SEC breakdown was horrible. I could agree with most of it if it were written back in December, but LSU is in 1st place in the conference @ the mid way point. I don't see how we're last on the choices to make the dance.

They always list teams by RPI, regardless of their commentary on their bubble status. But Yeah, I don't understand how South Carolina is better off than LSU. Kentucky certainly isn't right now.

I think Florida is in good shape, but Tenn could fall fast. They have a tough schedule left and a mediocre record. Their strong RPI can only do so much

The SEC is waayyy down this year. It's a young league with a bunch of average teams. LSU is the most talented and experienced team and I think LSU should get a birth if the Tigers continue to play as well as they have. They are right when they say that LSU's one quality OOC win was over an ok Wash State team. The lack of a marquee OOC win will hurt. May not keep them out of tourney but may affect seeding. No one hates the SEC. Most years the SEC has as many, if not more teams in the big dance than the other conferences

Our SOS is gonna bite us in the arse. The Committee kils teams for lousy OOC SOS and ours is among the worst in the nation. We have very little margin for error because of that. If we keep winning, we'll be in.

We can't expect anything more if we can't beat Xavier, aTm, and get drubbed by Utah like we did. I don't blame them. Our ooc schedule is VERY weak and so our 18 wins are misleading. However our SEC record is impressive albeit against a weaker than usual league. We should make it to the tourney if we go at least 5-4 the rest of the way (which is what I think we'll do) and take at least one game in the SEC tourney.

LSU is 18-4 and 6-1 in the SEC. They have 9 games left in the SEC, I really can't see them doing any worse than 6-3 the rest of the way. which would mean a 24-7 record before the SEC tourney. They may win a couple there and be sitting at 26-8 when seedings begin!! I think they are A lock and will most likely be a 6 or 7 seed.

That's least amount of explanation and question marks I have ever seen in a PJ post and somehow it comes across as one of the most thought-out, well-written, and intelligent of his.

thats what ive been saying for weeks. i really think 24 regular season wins is what we need to get in, with at least 1 sec tourney win. hopefully we put together a much better schedule next year, although our team may not be as strong.

Here is my problem with RPI. LSU on the surface didn't schedule that badly. We play 4 legitimate teams (Xavier, Utah, A&M, and Wash St.) and then a bunch of cupcakes. That's not really any different than our usual schedule or most mid-level "major" schools.

But our cupcakes are really, really bad. So that destroys our RPI. Had we played a bunch of bad teams instead of awful teams our RPI would be pretty good. I don't really agree with that.

In defense of our RPI, we have only beaten the awful OOC teams and lost to all the really good teams. So we could be #25 or #75 and probably have the same record.
