I grew up in Chicago. I was fortunate enough to be accepted to a wide range of colleges. Certain of my family members had attended the University of Chicago and many expected I would follow in their footsteps. But LSU offered me an academic scholarship and my dad encouraged me to fly down to Baton Rouge. I was a shy child and I think he sensed that the unique Louisiana joie de vive would benefit me.

I visited the campus. On my first day there, my father and I wandered into an empty Tiger Stadium, echoing like the Coliseum. On my first night there, a beautiful LSU ambassador took a group of admitted students to a bar called Sports. By the time I woke up the next morning, I couldn't imagine attending school elsewhere.

I enrolled. I was in the honors program. I was mentored by a great philosophy professor who honed my mind. I pledged a fraternity. I danced at the Varsity. I learned how to drink bourbon. And, more often, Natty Light. I fell into and out of the warm sea of infatuation. I went to bed one Friday night, expecting nothing, and woke to pandemonium: LSU tailgating. I memorized the fight song. Saturdays in the fall became sacrosanct.

In the spring, I surfed the Mardi Gras crowds on Bourbon. Or lounged in the Sunday silence of the quad. Or listened to the ping of the bats in Alex Box.

The entire city seemed supported by a legion of bronzed young female legs, long and glistening.

The sunlight reflected on the lakes.

I met the man who is, to this day, my best friend.

There were moments. There was a night I went to the movies at the Union with a moon goddess. There was an endless day spent playing pick-up football on the Parade Grounds.

There was laughter, so much laughter that I couldn't honor it all here, the sort of laughter you effortlessly, casually spill when you are young, the arm in arm drunken laughter of 2 AM.

I was no longer shy.

In movie class, I met a pretty Cajun girl with long brown hair. I visited her sorority house. We went to the Chimes. We kissed when LSU felled the mighty Gators. She brought me home to Lafayette. To my surprise, her father said I could have her hand. We were married beneath the oaks of a plantation under a wide and dazzling summer sky.

As they say, it was the time of my life.

And when you decide to attend LSU, it'll be yours too.

I envy you, kid.

LSU is unique. It's the only place I know where sofas belong on front porches, beer is as plentiful as water, keg push-ups are a form of exercise, and the parties never end.
LSU is about much more than classes,it's an experience that you will treasure your entire life. What is it about Baton Rouge that gets in your blood,Making you bleed purple and gold, and
intoxicates you (literally) with its sweet Southern comfort?
Maybe it's the beauty of the Quad, seeing
the gorgeous women Saying to yourself, Man,what I would do to meet her. Maybe it's the way it feels to sit on the grass of the Parade Grounds on a sunny day to study before a test,Only to get side tracked by the beauty of the campus, the people, the architecture, and the oaks.  Or could be...piling in a truck with six of your friends and riding around camups on a sunny afternoon,...deciding to head out to St. Francisville to go hunting or deciding to go to Grand Isle to go fishing one afternoon before your 8:30 class the next morning...barhopping in New Orleans for the night...catching your favorite local band in Tiger Land and knowing one day soon
they'll be famous...hanging out at Georges, catching the beer and burgers special on Friday...eating the heart attack in a box from Canes and enjoying every minute of it...spending more time trying to see who's in the library than you do actually researching; laughing at the drunk guy who was arrested for singing in his boxers after a football game...storming the field after a upset knowing the goal posts are coming down despite the state troopers that act as a pathetic
deterrent, and taking your piece of the field with you as a memoir...stopping and realizing when you're out with your best friends that these are the people that will one day be in your wedding. Maybe it's the football games, finding a date the night before, dressing up,sitting in the student section trying to keep dry, trying to stomach a Beam and Coke at 7 a.m. after a Friday night, and recognizing that same excitement in the eyes of older alumni who keep coming back year after year, joining their old friends and hoping to catch a glimpse of their youthful times at LSU.
Our time here was short, but we made the best of it. We were only there four or five years(some people six or seven, if they knew how to work their parents). Now we're making road trips TO Baton Rouge instead of FROM it, joining our old college buddies still dressing up for the games and still scanning the crowd for familiar faces. But one day, we'll be dressing differently and the familiar faces will be a little more scarce. We will have moved off to our own little world, engulfed in whatever endeavour we seek. But when we return, that same excitement will be rekindled. We'll look over into that student section and
remember when it was our time here and how quickly it came and went. We'll wonder about all those people we used to know; Where are they now?;Are they successful? What about that cute person I had a crush on. ;Is she married? Whatever happened to that guy in Free Speech Alley? ;It is everything Bama isn't...Ole Miss's worst nightmare. A Southerners wish and a Northerners dream.
The pride and joy of the Great State of Louisiana. A place where every fan bleeds purple and gold,And would rather be in Death Valley than anywhere else on a Saturday night. It's where we make those friends that we never loose touch with, Those companions that you can relate to, The ones that remember pledgeship,And all the things that scared you to death, and you sure as hell didn't want to do,But did it anyway, and laugh about now. Yes, we'll lose touch with a lot of people and names will be forgotten, but you'll ALWAYS have your close friends from your days at LSU. You'll email, talk on the phone, play bridge or have supper clubs on Tuesday nights.
You'll go hunting, or fishing, or just have a beer You'll tailgate at your almamater with everyone else, Only to have that swelling sense of pride
explode in your heart. One day you will be a parent and your child will sport a Little Tiger shirt and hat,(the kids we see all to frequently on game days) Yes, you will be one of those individuals, The proud parent that reminisces about the good ole days. When you are back at that stadium, looking at it with awe in the company of old friends. Most of your conversations will
begin with these two special words that will have the power to make you laugh or cry or simply smile- remember when......GEAUX TIGERS!!!

If your choices are between colleges in Texas and LSU, well, padna, it's like my pop once told me:

"Son, do you know the difference between a coonass and a jackass? The Sabin river"

i love LSU, but it depends on what you are looking to go into.. if you are comparing college towns and experiences, and can get into UT, you really cant beat that.. Austin>BR.. and Austin provides much more of the 'college experience' than BR..

if its all about sports for you.. then they are about even.. if its about culture, LSU is hard to beat.. if you are conservative, stay away from Austin.. if you are liberal, stay away from Waco and CS..

I am way to lazy to read all these pages. love to visit Austin. If you can't get in to UT right away, come to LSU. You will not be disappointed.

Big Choke Bob--

When you come in for a visit, make sure you get an introduction to Prof. Jim Stoner, chairman of Political Science--and tell him that the Tiger Rant sent you. He'll get a big kick out that one.

And one other thing, since no school in America--and this especially includes the Harvards, Berkeleys and UTs--any longer insists on your having a core curriculum in the "greatest that has been thought and said" by Western Civilization, ask Prof. Stoner for suggestions on designing a REAL curriculum. That way you can come out with a real education to go with the memories of those long-legged blondes in the quadrangle on a fine Spring day.
