ETA: Ok i screwed the pooch with my numbers. Here they are revised. and as far as 2005 goes we did force 21 fumbles but only recovered 4 would be the reason that we had a drop in numbers for then as well.

Here are lsu's defensive turnover numbers from 95- present. You can't tell me that it's just coincidence that the one season these idiots take over our numbers fall off the charts. It is a tribute to Coach Crowton for the amount of points we were able to put up and games we were able to win without short fields from turnovers.

1995 - 22
1996 - 20
1997 - 26
1998 - 21
1999 - 26
2000 - 21
2001 - 26
2002 - 25
2003 - 33
2004 - 23
2005 - 14
2006 - 21
2007 - 36
2008 - 16

Comparing those two guys to Tepper is a mis-justice to Tepper.

comparisons to tepper get thrown around too often on the board IMO; every DC we get reminds someone of Tepper. But in this case, you're right. I'd like to see some stat comparisons of our D in the tepper years vs. this year to be sure but i'm pretty sure what the results will be.

Our defense did not play well at D-line, LB, or CB and S. Those are just hard facts.

2007 Stats LINK

2008 Stats LINK

Turnover Margin 2007 National rank 2
Turnover Margin 2008 National Rank T-78

Another interesting fact on the left side under schedule and results beside the obvious W/L columns but the number of night games last year compared to this year - 2007 Every home game we played at night we won, the one we played during the day Arkansas we lost. Compare that to 2008 only 3 yep only 3 games played at night, yep we won them all barely (Troy)...We need more night games at Tiger Stadium

Lou Tepper was DC in 1997, 1998, 1999. Even though we gave up yardage those years we still caused turnovers. Those regular seasons were also only 11 games instead of 12.

MALVETO HAS GOT TO GO!
I feel those numbers just sum up this season beautifully. If a stranger who knew nothing about LSU saw those numbers, I think they would project LSU had a losing record this season---we were lucky.

I've said that to myself since halfway through the season when it became apparent that we wouldn't get any help from the D to cover for our short comings on offense.

Very tough for a young QB to go into games knowing they have to light up the scoreboard in order for any chance to win because the defense is so horrid

We actually 16. You quoted fumbles gained only. We had 7 ints as well for 16. Still a decline, just trying to get the facts straight. Not as fall off the table as it appears by the first post.
