We seem to have trouble landing the #1 recruit in LA each year. I realize we don't lose them all, but it seems to be a huge battle each year to keep them in LA and at LSU. I know we need to make all the promises and keep them and have a spot for the kid, but any thoughts?

Every case is unique and special...we will see what happens on signing day this year before we analyze this as "a trend".

Well, I think one problem is this year is that Randle is not an LSU fan. I believe he didn't pay much attention to CFB growing up so he isn't as enamored with LSU as a lot of kids are. I could be wrong but I think Dmitch said something about this.

I'll be very surprised if he signs with LSU.

If a kid grows up in La. watching LSU play football his entire life and he doesn't want to play for his school then you don't want him in my opinion. I want the ones to come to Alabama that want to play for the tide.

Joe McKnight is nothing special.

because they are good, and other good schools want them to play there

and contrary to popular belief, not everyone in LA is an LSU fan

I think this helps LSU. If he grew up watching CFB and was enamored with a program it would be USC or Miami. LSU wasn't good during his childhood.

Yes, yes they were. We're just getting old. He would have been about 10ish when LSU turned around. Personally, I don't remember too much of anything before that age.

Same reason Texas has. Sheppard is coming here. Its not just us that struggles with this. Every major program does because many of these kids just want to see what is out there.

Miami and USC were winning 30+ games in a row at that time.

I didn't really research anything prior to asking the question, but just going by memory that seemed we tend to struggle landing the top LA recruit. Went to Rivals and looked back to the highest LA rated recruit the past few years and we landed them all except Joe McKnight and Robert Lane.

Robert Lane '03 - lost him cause we signed Jamarcus Russell and Matt Flynn and he switched to Ole Miss and was a total bust
Early Doucet '04
Ryan Perrilloux '05
Al Woods '06
Joe McKnight '07
Rueben Randle - '08 - TBD

Definitely not a trend. Only trend is the suspense leading up to signing day.

Miami, yes. USC, not so much.

Thats true but I don't believe that is the case with Randle. I agree with you about McKnight though.

Maybe we can do it again if we lose the #1 recruit again

its all about how the kid feels around the coaches and the university. You just kind of know when you go there.

LSU seems to land the recruits from LA they want for the most part (including the #1 recruit)

As for why the recruiting is competitive? Because LA football isn't wyoming football... there's a lot of talent that is nationally relevant and recognized.
