wasting two timeouts???
Posted by fatheadgator on 11/9/08 at 4:16 pm00
I am sure this was covered well, but does anyone have an idea what the hell Miles was thinking when he called a timeout, then asked for the play to be challenged? did he think that it was going to be automatically challenged?

yes

maybe he wanted to think about it/talk to others who saw it better before using his challenge

I don't know either. You would think he would have asked during the first one he used. The refs were standing there talking with him.

I was confused by this as well, but I don't think it really mattered. I think he called the first time out thinking that the play would be reviewed. It wasn't reviewed and he figured that, although it was unlikely, that play being overturned would have been bigger at that point then losing a second timeout.
I was confused initially, but after I thought about it for a while, it wasn't as dumb of a move as it seemed like.

Nah, I don't think Les knew what the heck was going on. His decision making on personnel and his coaching staff will be under the microscope. Being the perception was he was lucky and winning with Saban's recruits. We shall see how he handles the program the next couple of years.

Surprise surprise, Miles screws up when it comes to game/clock managment. If you have watched LSU in the last four years Miles constantly makes major mistakes when it comes to game management (since his first home game against UT in '05)

STFU haters:
from the scoreboard
From what I saw:
Les called TO
PP went to the bench after the TO and told LM he had caught the ball.
I read LM lips on the sideline on the broadcast- watch for the replay: "I didn't know he came up with the ball"
At that point, I agree with the challenge. Your thinking has to be - I need to take every shot I have to get the ball away from the Gumps. THey were already in very close range for a FG. If PP tells LM that he caught the ball, then LM did the right thing backin his player and challenging the play. The replays were so hard to see who's the say PP didn't really intercept that pass?

So why not just challenge in the first place?

I was under the impression, every play in college football is automatically reviewed...No?

Miles actually sometimes dosent even looks like he is in controll of the team in the game....I mean how many times have we seen the Deer in the Headlights look when they show him on the sideline...i will be the first to admit it..I have never been a fan..I actually wish he would have taken his coaching skills to the old blue and yellow last year....but the only real person to blame is Sabans punk arse...by the time he actually told the truth about leaving ( after he denid it for two months) all the good coaches were taken so we had to settle for Miles

Same here. I thought it was foolish to burn two timeouts but that second timeout wouldn't have been all that significant.

I wonder if there is anything that Les Miles can possibly do to overcome the fact that he didn't build this program.

Win a NC with his players....

With that reception Alabama was in field goal range. We only had two timeouts, so we weren't going to be able to stop them from running the clock down anyway. It was a desperation move. Having the timeout wasn't going to help, so he took a shot at having it reviewed.

What was he going to do what that timeout if he "saved" it? Take it home and put it in the freezer to use on some hot day in July?
I think he did the right thing.
As I heard it on radio - the officials did not automatically review the play at first. Maybe he thought they were going to review it and that may be a valid gripe - he should have known one way or the other.
But, when it came time to run the next play, the best chance to win the game was to get the previous play reviewed - that could have been a game changer if it goes our way (turns out we blocked the FG but you sure cannot count on that)
I was glad to see him back up his player's insistence that he caught the ball - it looked as though he did, but you cannot fault the officials for not overrulling the play - it certainly was not conclusive from the replays I have seen since.

Okay because I point out the obvious I'm a "hater." LM looks lost on the sidelines at times, including against Auburn last year. If you really believe he had a clue how much time was left when the ball was snapped you are an idiot.

First only you know if you are a hater or not.
Second in this game Bama was going to the LOS quickly to line up and snap the ball- watch a replay you will see.
Neither of us KNOW he knew how much time was left but he was correct in knowing how much time the play would take so whats the problem?
