What exactly it is that our defense is struggling with.

I don't pretend to be a football expert, but even I'm struck by what, at times, seems to be a defense that is confused (pre and post-snap), unable to take reasonable angles to the ball carrier, and that is outclassed in terms of offensive speed, etc. Is this an offseason issue (weightroom, training, etc.) or a coaching issue? A bit of both?

Not at all, but it just seems painfully obvious that there has been a severe dropoff in execution since last year.

The schemes are terrible. When we blitz, we leave people in man situations that should never be covering in man. When we don't blitz we give the QB too much time and eventually someone will always get open. The LB's have real trouble dropping back in coverage, see UF and UGA LB that each had two pick sixes against us. Mallveto won't be the coordinator next year so I really hope we bring in someone with a REAL defensive plan and not this bullshite we've been playing all year. Oh, and it sure wouldn't kill our defense if our QB would just stop scoring for the other team.

They are stuggling in playing what we used to refer to as defense.

They are just not well coached. ITs not one thing. Its alot of things, the scheme, the lack of pressure by the D line plus the lack of blitzing. Even when we blitz we dont get to the QB in time. Blown coverages, guys who cant cover playing in our Secondary. LBs cant cover.

Well, basically everything.

All in all, our players are not well coached.

Giving up the big play is our biggest problem on defense. And half or more than half the time I'd say it's because someone isn't in position.

Florida is scary fast and I think they win the SEC in a walk.

UGA was indeed a very winnable game, which is why I'm not freaking out about this team just yet. We're a very green team at some key positions. We've obviously got some work to do and I'm not sure our co-coordinators are getting the job done. However, I don't think the mid-season axing does us any good. We've got to re-evaluate after the bowl season...

I don't have an answer worth printing but the confusion issue has been evident since game one with no noticable effort to correct. Its the inability to correct the obvious that has me most concerned about our defense and their coaches.

When you have two defensive coordinators you have none.

I tend to agree, and I think two things are in play there. One, we clearly haven't made the necessary adjustments in scheme. Two, these are young kids in the secondary and I think there's a bit of snow-balling going on. The FLA game shook their confidence a bit (as it should have) and the SC game wasn't the kind of performance that really qualified as a positive rebound. Then, Lee opend the UGA with that miserable pass...lo and behold, they're behind the 8-ball and the "here we go again" mentality creeps in just a little bit. Then, Stafford basically torched them in the first half... UGA capitalized on the momentum and our young D basically caved.

Considering we were down 14 with the ball on the UGA 40yd line with 9 minutes to go, I'd say we were still in that game homie.

Look, I'm not saying that we weren't beat soundly. We absolutely were. However, most of UGA's points came off of bonehead turnovers and a couple big offensive plays. It wasn't as if we were being dominated on the lines all day and were physically outmatched.

Contrast this to the FLA game, in which we looked like a high school quad and were outclassed in terms of speed and line play. That game worries me, but again, I think the Gators win the SEC in a walk this year.

What I see is:

Confusion
Players out of position
Busted coverages
LBs getting regularly sealed from running lanes
No consistent pressure from the DL
Missed tackles

No leadership - no one getting in people's faces when they blow an assignment.

I agree. The next five games will be very telling in regards to our coaching staff's ability to coach these kids through adversity.
