Why didn't LSU play UGA from 1954-1977

As I remember, LSU and Georgia had a stormy relationship going back to the '30s. A large post-game fight in Athens resulted in several members of the LSU cadet corps being left in hospitals.

I personally remember the 1952 and 1953 Georgia games, and although LSU won the 1953 game played in Athens, it was a tough, bloody win. Remember, in those days there were no face masks, and college football was in many respects legalized fist fighting. I guess that after 1953, it was decided not to continue the series.

Well,for some of you young SOB's , the SEC didn't have a lot of uniformity until the 70's and even that kept getting tweaked until the early 80's.

LSU didn't play Vanderbilt from 1958 until the '76 season. The 1969 game vs Auburn was the first since 1942. We weren't alone.Alabama and Kentucky didn't meet from 1947 to 1972. Vandy and Auburn didn't play from the 1955 Gator Bowl through 1978. The 1969 Gator Bowl was the only time Florida and Tennessee met in the 1960's.

LSU only played 4 bona fide SEC teams in 1968. Tulane's departure and Georgia Tech's from the SEC in the mid 60's messed things up.LSU played TCU and Tulane as appointed conference games in 1968. Alabama played 8 SEC games in 1972. They won the SEC with a 7-1 mark over Auburn ,who defeated them,who also had one loss,but was 6-1.

Starting with 1972,teams did have to play at least 6 SEC games. At least 5 were "fixed" with the other 4 in a home and home rotation. Tennessee won the SEC at 5-1 in '69 over LSU at 4-1. The Vols only played 5 SEC games in 1970,the year most SEC and NCAA teams started playing 11.

LSU's rotating teams starting in '72 through 1987 were:

1972-1973 Auburn
1974-1975 Tennessee
1976-1977 Vanderbilt
1978-1979 Georgia

this repeated through 1987 when the league went to 7 SEC games from 1988-1991.

Alabama and Ole Miss played one another home and home in 1980 and 1981,but those games were actually counted as 'non-conference' since the 6 game SEC schedule was inforced to preclude teams with different records winning titles. Unbeaten teams with different records were crowned 'co-champs',though as LSU's 6-0 SEC mark = Alabama's 7-0 mark in 1961.

Now,I understand that didn't answer specifically why didn't LSU play UGA from 1954-1977, but it sheds light on how bastardized the SEC schedules were and how many other teams also rarely played other members. When Miss State and Georgia Tech played a few weeks ago, it was their first meeting since 1930--3 yrs before the SEC started play.

And won the SEC in 1986 with only Georgia and Ole Miss , at home.
