Running a marathon fastest means you win, right?

I can understand the theory that the others may have ran faster if she was ahead of them, but 11 minutes is a lot of time.

If the difference was 20-30 seconds and the elite winner was waiving and celebrating the last 1/2 mile I could understand. She obliterated the elite winner by 11+ minutes though. This is bullshite.

that is really messed up

the 20 minute head start was a dumb idea in the first play, they should just stagger it like the crescent city classic

is the 20 minute head start a common thing for marathons?

As someone who runs marathons she likely knew what an "elite" time was and if her best was pretty close to 3 hours she should've run with the elite group.

There is still no good excuse for her not being declared the winner though.

my only thing is the elite group winner only knew that she was in first of that group and that's all she had to do to win. Could this winner have run 2:50 if she had this other woman in the race? You never know

While that's a good point, your time is still your time, and 11 minutes is a lot. It's not like the women at the front of the 'elite' group were slouching, I'm sure... they had to run hard to finish at the top.

But if they say that you have to be running in the 'elite' group to finish on the podium, the girl should have run in that group.

This is actually quite true, contrary to popular belief in distance racing you are racing other people not the clock, the elite runners didn't know there was someone ahead of them. Its a race not a time trial. Plus she should have registered with the elite runners, if you are a women and can run~3 hour marathons you should know this.

So she beat the elite runners? I could not distinquish that. That whole situation is fricked up. I hate it in sports when officials and organizers don't take responsibility and just say "we fricked up" and we will do our best andfix it. Instead they just hope it goes away and repeat the same shite over and over.

I don't know about that race and registration but I know in triathlons you have to qualify to become elite status. But then again, triathlons are set up different and she should have have read how top spots were to be awarded.

umm they didn't frick up, she didn't sign up in the right class. Also knocking 12 minutes of your marathon PR to go at 3 hours is kinda crazy.

Some of the elite runners would have picked up the pace had they known there was a rabbit among them. The pack speed determines race speed more than the actual clock. If he she had previously run times of about 3:07 like she said, she absolutely should have registered with the elite pack. It sucks, but i think the elite groups winning times would have been faster if she was there to push them.

i would think documentaiton of a previous race would ahve to be provided to compete in the elite group...possibly a sub 3:00 marathon, which she had never done

If it's that crazy to knock 12 minutes off your best time (and I agree that it is), she would have no reason to think that she should sign up for the elite group.
