So my wife and I bought a house and whoever laid the sod did not level the dirt before. I have some areas so thick that I cannot cut it with a gas or reel mower. Some areas seem to never grow-they are green, just very flat. I there anything I could do to avoid another summer of having to trim the entire yard because I cannot cut it? Should I get a mower and hack the dead thick parts down now? Should I de thatch the thick parts? Any help is really appreciated. Thanks.

The grass is so thick a lawn mower won't cut it?

Trying to understand what's going on before offering advice

Correct. It completely stops the blade. I then bought a reel mower that basically just skids through the thick part without cutting it. I have to use a trimmer to cut the lawn.

Maybe you're trying to cut it too low. Zoysia looks better when it's cut a little higher than say centipede.

If you can't cut the grass with your mower, first sharpen the blades. If that doesn't work get a real (bigger) mower. Hire a lawn service and see what works. Those guys know what's up.

The first house I bought had Zoysia and it was a great looking yard, but a lot of hard work too. When it got too thick we used a verticutter to thin out those areas.
I got lucky and met an old guy who was a retired extension agent and he would come by and give me advice. I learned a lot from him and I still use his advice today.

Good luck.

When you say you used a reel mower, was it powered or just a push version?

Bag and remove all clippings.

Zoysia rarely needs to be cut.

I have zoysia. It will get really thick if neglected. You need to scalp it. Bag all the trimmings. Hen start mowing it on your desired level. The grass will then become trained to that level.

We put emerald zoysia in our yard in Atlanta and by year #2 it was beautiful. We kept the landscaper on for that period of time to get it right. He used one of those large walk behind (powered) reel mowers with the steel rollers in front of and behind the blades. It was pretty slow growing and looked good for weeks at a time after it was "trained". I also used to see people sanding the low areas...I guess after a few years it fills in the holes and levels it out.
