Any suggestions, I'm thinking of purchasing a Remington 870 Express Compact Jr 20 gauge for my son.

bad idea, sorry. its still a 20 ga but smaller/lighter = greater felt recoil. unless he is bigger than average. i bought a used 1100 and cut it down to fit for my oldest sons first shotgun after breaking him in on a .410

Anyone with non auto guns, I recommend ordering some RST shotgun shells for low recoil...

Was 9 when I got mine - average height and build at that age. Hunted with 3 in #3 buckshot to kill my first deer - kicked pretty good on me but not enough to scare me away from the gun.

Good looking kids Cajun. How old we're they when you bought them the guns?

Mossberg 500 Bantam 20 gauge. I bought one for my son last year. It comes with several recoil pads as he grows into it.

I have one. It kicks as bad or worse than a 12 gauge semi, but like the compact size.

I have both 870 Express Compact and Compact Jr for my boys. The Compact was a little long for my 10 year old so I bought a Compact Jr. I did have to put a Cheek-Eez pad on it because the stock was hitting his cheek pretty good. He shoots the hell out of it.

I considered cutting down the regular compact stock but was concerned about weight distribution (I guess you could put some lead shot or something in the buttstock to compensate)

The lightest shotgun I found for an 8 year-old kid is the Mossberg .410 pump. I think it's called the Model 500 "Super Bantam."

It's lighter than any of the single shot crack-barrels I found, and it has a set of spacers to add to the butt of the gun (to accommodate kids as they grow).

We've had this gun for 18 months. It has done very well on sporting clays and crows.

My first one was a single shot 20 gauge. Makes them take their time and aim. Recommend it.

I started off with a single shot 20 gauge. Then moved to an 870 express jr. That 870 is tough to beat. It survived plenty of seasons in the duck blind and great squirrel hunting gun. I still pull it out every dove season. Fun gun to shoot.
