My mom has been asking for one for Christmas, and I'm not sure what to get her. I don't want to get anything too expensive because i'm not sure how often she'll use it, or possibly even like using it.

the one i found is pretty cheap on amazon. It has good reviews, but it might be too small.
LINK

by the way, is this the right board or should have i went to the Food and Drink Board. Feel free to RA.

I have this smoker and love it. It's been on sale recently on Amazon but I see that it's went back up.

I don't have much to add except to your mom for wanting a smoker.

I would get her an electric smoker if you want to increase the probability she will use it.

Academy has the 40" stainless model with the controller in the back and the vent on top for $299 right now. That's a huge deal. I picked up one last week and did 2 butts on it Sunday. Very happy with the results. Its the stainless model.

Masterbuilt 20070311

Academy on Siegen and in Denham both had stock as of Sunday.

I have a side question on these. If I don't want too much smoke flavor but just low and slow with smoke only about 2 hours or so, does it still work good?

An oven would work fine.

does your mom have much experience in the department of smoking meats and some tender loins?

I would recommend an electric smoker. Much easier to maintain temperature if she is new to it. As someone else said, she will likely use it more that way.

I have a cheap Masterbuilt electric that I have had for about 5 years. It works great. I am probably going to upgrade at some point to a square one with a viewing glass to have more room.

Yup. I added the cold smoke box to mine so that I fill it up and let it roll. If you only used the reservoir in the smoker, you could fill it once or twice and that's it.

That's the generation 1 model, and the one to get. The Temp & Time control is mounted on the back with the smokestack on the top right.

It will be the most simple way to go for someone that has no experience smoking meat. You can almost set it and forget it. That's what it was designed for, but it does come with a few flaws.

The thermometers aren't accurate and can read up to 40 deg. hi or low. The "Maverick ET 732" digital thermometer will cure that. LINK also the wood chip burner will only provide around 45 minutes of smoke before you have to reload it. The cure for that is found on the same site here:LINK the 5x8 AMNPS is the one to use for the Masterbuilt 30 & 40. They will provide from 1 - 12 hours of smoke from pellets.

A ten pound Butt could take up to 20 hours to get the core temp to where you want it. Do it right and the results will make you cry.

Took 15 hours to get to 195 and was tender moist and delicious. Good bark as well.

Get a "Hasty Bake" worth every penny and you can grill and smoke on it.

Not sure with electric, but with a charcoal smoker a few chunks of wood at the beginning will provide all the smoke flavor you want. Over-smoked meat is not good.

I have both a weber charcoal smoker and a masterbuilt electric...

I agree with some of the others in that I would probably recommend an electric smoker for your mom to try out first, as they are just worlds easier to use...you could try something like this for about the same price as what you are proposing:

Electric Smoker

If your mom uses the electric for a year or so and likes it, she may want to step up to a charcoal (which gives more smoky flavor, but is a lot more difficult to use and clean)...at that point, you could get her something like this:

Weber Charcoal Smoker

If you have more questions, just ask...

I just went from electric to stick burner and I have enjoyed the new one.... however for your mom I would definately go electric. Much easier to use and a lot less work when cooking. There are several good ones on the market..... Mine was a smoke hollow.
