I'm shocked he pulled him all the way up to the boat ramp.

I'm pretty sure he's right.

I thought having a rod and reel drastically improved your ability to fight but I guess I was wrong.

What is illegal - the handline or the fish?

possession of a goliath grouper (Jewfish) is illegal. I believe, could be mistaken, but even targeting them is illegal

There was a video of Manny Puig jumping in and bringing one up and the feds got mad about it

quick info, when a grouper locks his gills/jaw on you, you aren't getting out until he says so

Would not surprise me if it's illegal to keep one on the line but not sure how you could prove intent.

Tell these guys that

LINK

They have a shitload of videos of them online going after grouper. Sometimes in what looks like suburbia.

Yep, I went face to face with one on a wreck in about 60' of water.

There was also one that used to hang around the old dock near Fort Jefferson on the Dry Tortugas. Seriously only about 20 feet deep, but he owns those pilings.

It's not illegal to fish for them. It may be frowned upon tho to wrestle them.

Biggest one i have ever seen was in about 50 feet of water on an artificial reef out of Venice Beach FL. Damn thing looked like a rock pile till it started moving and drumming at us. You could feel it in your chest when it drummed. It was at least twice the size of the one in the video. Damn thing had me scared for a bit as it kept turning to watch us.

We used to fish for them out by the rigs out of Pt Aransas when I was a kid. Hooked a bunch of big ones, but they are hard to get out of the structure.
