I got a KC Kayak that I'm going to rig with a transom mount minn Kota trolling motor and I've done a lot of reading but any input would be greatly appreciated. It seems that every decision is a trade of of some sort.

1) The motor- I'm getting an Endura 30lb or 40lb thrust. One advantage of the 30lb is a 30 inch shaft while the 40lb has a 36 inch thrust. I've read many people say buy the biggest motor possible but that will impact my battery decision later. I'll be using the motor more to increase my range than true trolling so I think the 30lb is plenty enough power.

2) The battery- Any opinions on here will be appreciated: 24 or 27 class? If I go 40lb thrust motor I have to go bigger. Is there a gold standard battery under $200? In pics of other folks rigging, I see plenty of exposed batteries. I'd prefer it fix a box like this:

3) The charger- I assume buying the minn kota charger I'm including a pic of would be fine but should I get a 7-stage charger instead?

4) Rigging- internal wire the battery to the front of the yak or can I get away with cooler/ice/drinks in the front to balance the weight? The simplicity of battery box in the back is attractive. Any feedback?

5) I'll be using more in freshwater with a handful of MS marsh trips a year and a LA marsh trip or 2 a year. As long as I thoroughly wash the shaft and remove the prop and rinse after each salt use, I should be ok right? Not really worried about warranty stuff since it's such a cheap motor.

Thanks in advance and here is a pic of yak for visual reference.

Nice rig. Wish I could help you. I'm curious to hear what suggestions you get. Makes me miss the ole yak.

Thanks. The blank layout really did it. Might not be the fastest or best paddle but it looks like the ultimate marsh/lake yak to me. Really excited about sight fishing reds, standing up, from a kayak

Stoms, I am no help regarding the trolling motor but I just got a 12 ft yak that Pillage tricked me into getting by showing fancy and cool fishing videos. Pretty good rig.

You wanna hit the Biloxi Marsh with them, LMK.

You been fishing the BM lately?

You might want to look at the 40 pound thrust if range is your priority. A 40 pound thrust running at 70% might give you a lot more range than a 30 pound running at 100%.

High RPMs drains the battery faster and you will be limping in if not paying attention to the battery.

I haven't been to camp since late October and weather was bad so we stayed on Jourdan. Stoms Jr showed up the 27th so I'll be fishing the Rez for the foreseeable future. I'll spend the next few months setting up new sled and studying google earth. Do they launch from BSM? Is your email username at gmail?

I had the same kayak. Put the battery in the back and ice chest in the front. Don't complicate/overthink things and you'll be fine.

Yes. That's my email just add TD at the end though.

Congrats on Jr

I have not noticed yaks launching at BSM but I did launch at Reggio fairly easy on my maiden voyage.

Plan to launch at Delacroix soon to
hit the graveyard.

Get the 40lb. Don't go full throttle. Profit.

Another thing to think about is registration. If i understood the law correctly, once you put any type of power to it, then it has to be registered. This is why I decided to stay away from adding a trolling motor to mine.

Same here. I wanted either the KC or Nucanoe, but decided on a used Outback.

Delacroix is awesome on the yak. The reds are within 50 yards from the launch.

Where do most folks launch in Regio? I saw a few spots on the side of the higgway where the canal led in the marsh that looked like good commando launch spots

Cool. Did you change the wires to run direct? How does that work?

There's an actual launch right at the small bridge.

They have a small shack with dead bait, drinks, etc. no live bait

Just put alligator clips on the trolling motor and connected it. Super simple and worked great

I love simple and this sounds simple. I can always internally wire if I dont like the setup. Thanks
