Wire Mesh to Snake Proof Yard

I was thinking about putting some 1/4 galvanized wire mesh around my fence line to prevent so many snakes from coming in my yard. Just trying to deter as many as possible, not prevent them all.

I know I won't stop them all but just trying to reduce the #'s. I live next to Cane fields, a river and my neighbors have tons of ground cover next to the fence so I have quite a few.

I have a wooden fence around the whole backyard, so I was going to just install the mesh 1" into the ground and 6-8" up to fence around the whole perimeter.

Worth it? Worthless? Thoughts?

Thanks!

Try snake away from Lowe's. I had 4-5 garter snakes within a week span. Wife freaked out and bought some. Haven't seen one since. FYI, don't spray when it's windy out. A gust came through when I was spraying between shed and fence and got on my arm and half my face. Felt like mace.

Good thinking, snakes can't climb.

I did this at my place a few months ago. I used light gauge mesh, 36" tall. Bought a few rolls of the mesh from a neighbor at a discount. I think the whole project ran about $150, but my fenced in area was pretty small.

I don't think 6-8" will give you much protection but it's better than nothing. I also have the 36" mesh around my dog's kennel run. It's a 6'x10' kennel and sits inside the yard

Thanks!

Obviously I know snakes can climb. Like I said I'm not trying to prevent all snakes period. But I believe if you block the path of least resistance for them to come in the yard it should prevent a lot of them.

Dude. Are you going to put a dome over your house to keep mosquitoes and wasps out? They harm about 1,000x more people every year than snakes.

Seems like a lot of work for a non issue.

I hear you. It's not like it's the worst thing in the world, but with young kids and dogs in the backyard all the time I'll take some reasonable steps if it helps.

I had my doubts too. Made the yard smell like cinnamon for a few days though. Whether or not it was that, haven't had any since. I would definitely spend $10 on that and take 15 minutes to spray it than a couple hundred dollars and a few hours putting wire mesh down.

Teach your kids about snakes instead of teaching them to be scared of them. Damn.

When you figure out how to explain that to a 1 year old let me know. This has nothing to do with teaching kids about snakes, this is about reducing them in my yard.

We have a privacy fence and a drainage behind our yard. I killed one of the larger moccasins I've seen in our yard last July.

We're about to have kid no 4 and our oldest is 5. I stapled fine gauge fence at the bottom of our fence that boarders the overgrown drainage.

I feel it's better than nothing.
