Winterizing your 2 stroke outboard
Posted by DuckManiak on 8/17/14 at 10:25 pm00
My 150 mercury is running like a top. I bought my boat in March and have had no problems with it. I'm about to go to work for 3 months in North Carolina. Besides draining gas lines, what steps should I take to make sure she runs when I get home?

I don't do anything to mine but also no ethanol gas goes in it

I'm of the opinion that draining gas lines does more bad than good if you have good fuel and put stabil in it.
If it has ethanol, I would fill the tank up and put stabil in it. Run the motor for a minute and disconnect the fuel and let it run itself out. Take the spark plugs out and put a shot of TCW3 oil in each cylinder, put them back in and turn the motor over two or three times, and put a trickle charger on the batteries.
The above is probably overkill for a 3 month sit-up but it'll be good to go when you get back.

Put Startron or stabil in the gas tank. run the boat for at least 15 minutes to get it up to the fuel injectors.
this is all we ever did it the marina I worked at and never had a problem. some of those boats SAT six to eight months.

That's all I ever do. Main problem is batteries.

OP, were you live at? Do as others said with stilbill. Make sure once you finish running it, you lower the motor all the way down to drain all water out the motor. Any livewells? Make sure all drain and any and all drain lines and pumps has NO water in them. Also make sure all water is out the bilge too!

If you don't plan on running it at all for 3-4 months during the winter.
Do- Fog the motor.
Don't run the gas dry in the motor because you will not only starve the motor for gas, you'll starve it for oil.
Heavy mixture of Startron and seafoam in a one gallon gas can.Fill half way and run the motor for about 5 minutes with this mixture of non ethanol, seafoam and startron.
Fog the motor till it dies after running for about 5 minutes.
This is all you need to do as far as the motor goes.
This is also an excellent time to drain and fill your lower unit because any water in the gear oil is potentially a problem with freezing.
I've seen split lower units from a little bit of water in the lower unit.
That's it.
All this takes about 30 minutes to do.

Well damn, guess I'm going to boat city thanks for your detailed post. This is my first 2 stroke (besides tiller handles) I used to run no ethanol, but the store I usually went to shut down. Now, it's 15 miles out the way to get it.
