A posted a asking for advice a few weeks ago. I went into my local gunshop,to buy a new Tikka .308 bolt action, but I spotted The Model 88.1958 model, with an old Redfield lo-pro scope and nice case.

I asked for advice here, and like somebody suggested,I went ahead and bought the model 88,with plans to go back and buy the Tikka.

Finally got to take the Winchester to the shooting range yesterday.I didn't bore sight it,I figured I might get lucky.
I took 1 careful shot at 100 yards,2 inches low,1 inch to the right. I felt good about my shot,so I went ahead and adjusted the old scope. My next 3 shots were a 1/2 inch group right on the cross hairs of the target.I took 4 more shots aiming slightly above those 3, another 1/2 inch group, with 2 of my shots going through the same hole.

I called it a day and stopped by the gunshop,to tell them I wouldn't be needing that Tikka after all.The guy grinned and said " you shot that model 88 huh?"

I did end up buying a nice old Remington 550-1 .22,that I will shoot some tomorrow in the back yard.

One of my prized possessions is my grandfather's 550.

Being it's a pre 64, depending on condition and caliber, it could be worth some serious coin. I have owned one 88 and several 100's, really well made guns.
Congrats

I have never shot 1,but I have always heard that they are about the most accurate.22 ever, and will shoot shorts, longs and LRs. It looks great too,I took it apart last night and cleaned it good. It's never been shot much.

It's not mint condition, but fantastic shape for a 60 year old rifle. Well cared for.

Thanx for the reply. Do you still have the 88?

Nice. Those old Winchesters are fantastic if you can find one in good condition.

Auggie,
The 1970's are calling for you!! Those Redfield lo-pro scopes were very popular back in the day.

I also have a Winchester Model 88 in 308 Win. My father bought it in the late 60's when we were living in OR. Unfortunately, the length of pull is much too short as someone removed to much wood from the buttstock when they put a recoil pad on it. After my dad died and the gun became mine, I bought a semi-inletted stock from Bishop's. Spent a lot of time on that stock and the gun shot pretty good w/ it. I even killed a deer w/ it. But the stock developed a crack at the rear of the receiver. Bishop's was kind enough to replace the stock. I immediately went to work on the stock, but never finished it as that was about the same time my attention turned to hunting w/ handguns. Some day I'll finish the stock. Enjoy your Model 88 as they can be really good guns.

Yeah man, they were the shite back in their day,and it's still a good scope, dials in great and is obviously very stable.will probably put it on my new/old .22. it has a cheap scope on it,that I can put on my speedmaster.

Hope you get that 88 shooting again soon!

Great guns! I've got a pre-64 in .308. After I purchased it I haven't used any other gun for deer hunting. My father has a pre-64 in .243.

I bought an old Model 70 a few years ago. Pretty sure the cope I took off was a Redfield too. Those things must've been money back in the day.

Stumbled across this when I googled your gun. If you haven't seen it, it's a nice read.

Unfortunately sold the 88 and all 100's
Bought them years ago before values took off, then off loaded when their values got too high to keep. When I got into them they went for under 200. Also I'm more of a fan of bolt actions.
I've had to make a rule that if they sit unused for 25 years then I unload.
