In the last 30 years the auto industry hasn't made any significant strides in fuel economy (specifically in trucks). Whats going on? Why don't we see a breakthrough in technology in this industry?

I believe it's more a physics problem than a political statement.

Yeah plus no one here really wants a truck that'll do 40 MPG. They'd like the idea of that number but wouldn't want the cost/complexity or complete uselessness of a vehicle that'll do it.

US auto manufacturers hire engineers from ITT Tech. They also hire designers from The General insurance commercials. Horrible, stupid, and dumb. Every single one of them.

The EPA sucks CARB's tube steak, and follows anything they do. Great idea, let's do what California does. They are a big limiting factor in gas mileage.

Case in point:
From the factory, my diesel truck got ~13mpg highway. Got rid of all of the EPA bullshite and put a new program on it. Viola! 24mpg highway and I drive like an a-hole. One morning I was getting 13mpg, and that afternoon I was getting 24mpg

If you had been making 400hp pickups in 1970 they would have been getting about 2 gallons to the mile instead of 20mpg like they get today.

Tech is definitely improving.

On one of our new tractors we have to add BluDef to take out the sulfur. If it runs out, shuts down your tractor

I think there was a Honda civic in the 80s or 90s that had 40+ mpg before the regulations kicked up.

Same thing happens with new OTR diesel trucks, every piece of equipment sold, boat motors, generators, etc. Anything with a diesel motor in it is now less reliable, more expensive, less fuel efficient, and more expensive to maintain

A Jetta TDI gets 60+mpg in Europe. A Jetta TDI here gets 40+

Almost every car on the market overseas has a diesel motor as an option. They don't here because it is too expensive to retrofit them for US regulations
