Why do my live shrimp die so quickly?

I use a normal aerator when I fish off the bank and they consistently die after 15 minutes. Is it dirty hands contamination? Is my compressor not blowing hard enough?

you change the stone on your aerator? Is your bucket clean and free of contaminants? You keeping your water cool and adding new water every so often?

Water in the shade? Its getting to hot you cruel bastard, lol
this is my guess if you have ruled out contaminants and air source.

Temperature is a big thing. If you are in the sun, a bucket is going to get warm. replace the water periodically.

Take a few water bottles and freeze them before you go fishing.
Once you get to where you are going put a water bottle in there.
I've always heard that you should not add any other water as the change in PH can kill them quickly.

Keep them cool as you can. Freeze a plastic bottle of water and drop it down in your bucket on a hot day. It'll keep your shrimp cold without diluting your water solution. A teaspoon of Hydrogen peroxide also helps. Get the deads ones out ASAP.

Sunscreen on your hands?

last trip I went on all 100 stayed alive, I didn't pump any water at marina into them, I kept them cool and only pumped water when I got to the islands to fish, they stayed alive and we went offshore to catch mangroves. ill continue to try this and see if it works. also like wick said no sunscreen on your hands either.

with an auto circ livewell, they never die

I always use to stack one 5 gal bucket inside another. In the bottom bucket, put a bunch of ice. It'll keep the shrimp in the top bucket cool.

If you clean the inside of your bucket with soap or simialar it can kill the shrimp.

use a cooler instead of a 5gallon bucket. I have a small 12pack Igloo with a hole on top for the aerator hose and have kept shrimp alive for over 24hrs without changing out water.
This is how I keep live bait in my kayak- same method should work for you on the bank.

This is what I was coming to say. You need a bucket dedicated to holding bait. Don't ever put any soap or oil/diesel/gasoline in it. I mean, if you pressurewash the shite out of it and clean it good I'm sure whatever bucket you have can be cleaned out good enough, but a little bit of residue will kill them quick.

I killed 100 beautiful croakers by putting my sun-screened hands in the livewell one morning. I may have been drunk.

you should freeze water from the bayou. Chemicals in tap water could kill them as well

is the pump motor for your aerator in the water or mounted to the side of the bucket?...
