Big excitement over a tiny bird. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) says a major milestone was reached this week when the first whooping crane chick hatched in Jefferson Davis Parish. State officials say the whooping cranes in Louisiana's wild disappeared in 1950. They were reintroduced into the wild in 2011. "This is something we've been looking forward to and anticipating since the reintroduction began in 2011,'' said LDWF biologist Sara Zimorski, who leads the Louisiana whooping crane project. "One of the major steps in restoring the species is successful reproduction. We've had several pairs nesting the last couple of years but until now no favorable outcomes. It's an exciting time for us and all of our partners who have worked so hard alongside us." The baby bird's parents are a 4-year-old female and a 3-year-old male. The state says the birds paired this winter and produced eggs for the first time in mid-March.

Just a matter of time before Boudreaux is shooting them off his crawfish ponds.

I'm bet every Boudreaux and Thibodeaux within 10 miles of these birds have had a visit from LDWF with a please don't shoot talk.

I'm sure it was more than a "please".

Didn't they find one dead earlier this year? May have taken out a billboard about it if I'm not mistaken.

I think they lost one or two last year or the year before. There were billboards and rewards all over looking for the person(s) responsible.

Lots of money spent on a couple birds...hope JBE doesn't notice. Good to see them showing some progress.

I believe it's all, or mostly, private funds.

Looks like that's where a lot of it comes from. The link isn't real clear how much the state puts in every year, but it looks like it started with 401k the first year.

I used to work on the project. Seeing that chick hatch is some awesome progress, and if I'm not mistaken, it's from the newest pair bond among the population.

The biologists that work on that project pour their hearts out into it and I'm glad we've finally seen that first egg hatch after so many that have been infertile and not viable.

And yes, the vast majority of money poured into this project is from private donors and this will surely influence them to keep contributing. This will hopefully win over the skeptics within LDWF as well.

What an awesome day for the Whooping Crane!

I know they track them, but aren't they migratory? What keeps them from up and heading to another state?
