Which OBer took his bass boat out into the gulf for tuna?

Yes, yellowfin tuna are the closest to the Louisiana coast they'll be all year, but no, that doesn't mean you should go target them in your 18-foot bass boat.
Capt. Hunter Caballero was offshore out of South Pass Thursday when he heard the distinctive sound of a running boat bouncing up and down in the rolling waves.
"I turned around and looked, and it was a bass boat trying to do 40 (mph) in the open Gulf, seven miles offshore in blue water," Caballero said. "It was a funny sight to see. I've never seen a true bass boat that far offshore."

I've taken a small boat off shore within swimming distance of the beach, but never in blue water.

It doesn't look too rough...

I don't see a problem with it. I have taken a tiller skiff to the Chandeleur islands, more than once. Took a Mavrick HPX to chase tuna on fly behind shrimp boats.
Boats are almost always more capable than the person operating them. In the right hands, that bass boat is pretty safe.

Was fishing in one this past weekend. We talked about running to the shrimp boats because we were already at the end of SE pass. Then we realized we did not have the equipment or the storage to handle a big YF.

Hope they don't capsize from the waves

I've seen a 17 whaler out at West Delta fishing for tarpon. Wasn't blue water, but way to damned far for a 17 whaler. Dude was by himself out there. Watched him boat a fish by himself too.

I don't like rock climbing either, but to each his own.

There are guys that will go 20 miles out in a 12 ft zodiac around here. Not sure if it's a case of brass balls or brain damage.

How far out would be a consensus no big deal in a bass boat? I've been pretty scared in Pelto before.

Maybe in that picture. I've been out there where it turned from 2-3's into 6-10's and I really don't know if we would have survived in a bass boat. I was on the starboard side of the console taking walls of water in the face that were coming from the port side of the boat. And that was a 31' boat. I would have been scared shitless if it wasn't for the fact that we had a charter captain with thousands of hours on the water manning the wheel. I don't think I'll ever play the offshore game in anything other than boats meant to be out there.
