If you know how archaic electrical works, and carry a bunch of spare parts, a D90 is hard to beat, but both have 3 lockers IIRC. That's worth its weight in gold
Strong
Reliable (500k+)
Easily fixed (all parts are easy to touch)
Can be jerry rigged and still work fine
Has or has ability to make room for bigger tires
Gearing
Strong frame and can pull a decent trailer
Lockers
Underbody protection
Odd one, but a good alternator
Engineered to have cheap parts break before expensive ones
All of that leads to a Toyota Landcruiser or truck

I've seen old 90's struggle in the jungle and live at mechanics shops.

Some of my Land Cruisers. I only have three now.

The green 40 isn't a domestic model. It's a BJ-40 with a 4 cylinder diesel. Slow but steady.
The gold 80 series has a safari turbo, 3 link 4 link and is super dangerous with too much HP.

My 83 Toyota SR5 was about as badass an offroad machine as I've ever run across. Deep snow, mud, ice, 23% grades...it did it all. I sure miss her.

willis Jeep and yes I drove it through places most 4 x 4 would not go through today

The only thing they had going for them was that they were light. You can get that in earlier Toyota trucks

That's a beast. My friend had one and we drove it up to the Arctic Circle. I thought for sure we were going to get stuck several times.

True. Those old samis were like that, too. Not like tons of Cruiser steel to sink to the frame/axels. But, if you find hard ground, down deep, you can grind forward and reverse gears at high RPM's between shifting. It sounds like its tearing gear teeth, but they won't break.

My step dad had a mid 80's toyota with 35" buck shots that would go anywhere, and my uncle had a 1971 bronco that would do the same.
I've got to believe the solid front axle is the common denominator.
But, my Honda foreman will out perform them all!

Both of my Tacomas would just sit there and churn mud, normally without getting stuck. You could get out and see where the undercarriage just completely drug the entire time.
I drove through a 200 yard wide field once dragging the entire way. Took like 10 minutes, and the grass was shaved off where I drove

I've got a 1955 Willys Wagon that my son and I are rebuilding. I hope that it is the kind of beast that I expect it to be.
Once we've got it done, I'll start a thread to show off our skills.

Jumping a friend's 80 series. It's stock and drove straight as an arrow after punishing her.

Sounds awesome. I love wrenching with my kids.
Before pics?

This is right after we got her. Little DC went pressure washer crazy trying to knock all the dirt off.
The one with the body has a pretty straight body but a really bastardized frame (x-members cut, new shite welded on it, etc). It also had a Ford 300 six in it. So we found a rolling chassis with everything original, including the Super Hurricane flat head motor. We're basically sending tub off for body work and paint while we rebuild the other chassis and then we'll put it all back together. Once we're done it should top out at 55mph.

Wow, that's sweet. Nothing wrong with doing 55. My old rusted BJ-40 does 55 on a good day.

If you're a member of LA4x4...you may have seen a post a while back about an xterra build. Within it, a true testament to the reliability of a different 4x4 lol

Not a member, but I've rode with them before. Good bunch of folks.

Stick a late 90s Toyota drive train in it, small lift, and be ready to have fun
I'm excited to see what it's got going for it...bought it sight unseen but sometimes you have to roll the dice a little
it's going to live the rest of its life being driven drunkenly around an island with no supervision

Let's just say a little bird told me you can put a small lift on it, a 2 inch body lift, 33s, and spin em over just fine in low range.
And if you happen to flip it a couple of times, it won't even mess up the alignment.
If a 4 door, I have a 2inch custom exbaust with a hugh flow cat and magnaflow that you NEED.
That and a few intake mods and you can get nearly 100hp
