It's a picture from a movie. It could be an airsoft gun for all you know.

I'm using context clues.

Not a 240 b. The carrying handle isn't right. Also wtf is with that belt being looped over the top like that? Are they trying to get it to jam or have issues with cycle of ops?

Those are definitely not 556 rounds on the belt though

The question was what is the gun. Not what is the ammo can or what's on this belt.

My opinion is still that it is a M249-E2. The MK48 is a scaled up M249 and they look similar, but Look at the muzzle device then compare it to the Mk48, which has a collar. Also, the ammo appears as if it is just draped over the gun instead of actually fed into it. Probably because .308 won't fit in a 5.56 gun. Just my opinion.

The rounds are looped back into it. You can tell I'd you look closely. Although it does look more like a saw because the hooded front sight post and the metal heat shield thing. I don't think the 240 has that.

It does look like the M249 is our winner

And yes, that image was lifted from the film Sicario.

I tend to agree (and did before I saw it was you ) - let's start with the basics:

It is clearly a FN design, derived from their excellent Minimi. Now. the bore is difficult to gauge, because of the muzzle brake.

The biggest thing that sticks out to me (pardon the pun) is the forward facing of the gas assembly. In Mk48s I have seen, it appears to have a nipple or other protrusions. In M249 variants, that tends to present a flat face forward, like in this picture.

And, at first glance I thought it was a M240B - and I am somewhat more familiar with those (having been around them more - as far as actual experience, I've fired a M60 and a M249 - but not a M240B). But, the front sight post is too close to the receiver.

And this could be a modified gun(or movie prop) or other variant with which I have no familiarity. Clearly it is posed and "staged" as a 7.62mm machine gun (and something is wonky about the belted rounds that stream off to the left side of the picture - right side of the gun - and they look fake or wooden down the belt - could be a photographic issue), but look at these pics:

Gut instinct that is a M249 with a shortened (proportionally, anyway) barrel - that is meant to look like a Mk 48 (or Maybe a Mk 46, but whoever is doing this doesn't understand the difference between 5.56mm and 7.62mm).

To me the barrel doesn't look shortened, just perspective making it appear that way.

I was too lazy to post a picture, but since we have one now...Look at the gas cylinder on the 249 vs the 48, then look at the gas cylinder in the OP's picture. It has the larger diameter of the 249. Also, notice the lack of picatinny rail on the side of the hand guards in the OP, a feature also shared by the M249-E2.

Now y'all see what I SAW?

FTR I initially thought SAW but the 7.62 ammo can threw me off. I didn't consider that it may be from a movie I'd never heard off

It wouldn't be the first time in my life that I was wrong, but I had to tote one of those everyday for 9 months. Would be nice to have a side pic but I'm fairly certain that's what it is.

Well Mr. Crimsonsaint, it's just like I said. I defer to those of you out there that have more experience with this kind of stuff than I do. I will try to get a side pic of this machine gun, but honestly, the folks that filmed Sicario didn't do us any favors in this regard.
