Dad has been wanting an offshore boat for a while and finally pulled the trigger on a 28' Cape Horn. We aren't exactly "newbies" to offshore fishing but the only offshore we have done is charter wise. So what is your favorite combo for snapper, amber jack, and tuna?

Get yo self one of these bad boys. I don't think you'll ever have to worry about being outgunned.

I use tekotas for snapper. Has a level wind so I don't have to worry about line bunching up from people not laying back on spool properly. I use Everol Canyon Specials 40w size 80w drags for AJs on bent butt rod with Jerry Brown. Tuna 50s with power pro.

I have:

Okuma vector on a beef stick
Penn Squall on a shimano something or another 6'0 rod
Quantum Cabo spin reel on an ugly stick.

You need to get at least one solid Penn spinner for sight-casting. We usually bring at least 2 with us, because the cobia often come in small packs and are dumb enough to keep biting after others are hooked.

That's the biggest thing, being able to anticipate what you should encounter as you fish out or in. And change accordingly if you don't have the rod numbers. I have them now, but when I first started that used to piss me off.

I'm flying back into BR tomorrow afternoon, just in time to head down to Fourchon for my first trip of the year. Should be a long night of rod maintenance.

My fishing partner is headed down there tonight, so I think he'll knock some of it out.

Any of you boys fishing out of the Fourchon/GI area? I wouldn't mind discretely sharing numbers in case anyone has problems out there.

We're thinking about heading out Fourchon either Saturday or Sunday depending which day gives the better weather/wave forecast.

Last I checked, Saturday looked better. It seemed to be picking back up on Sunday.

Saturday looks pretty damn good as far as the wind goes, considering the last couple weeks.

I looked at a Penn spinner and ended up going with this new quantum cabo csp 80.

55 lbs of impact drag
