I'm really considering getting the chrome on my truck painted black to match the truck. I hate the chrome. Is there any method to this that is long lasting and reliable?

Best way? Get the chrome removed first by sandblasting or chemical treatment. Then prime and paint.

I would think you'd have to strip it or sandblast it or something first. But I'm no expert.

Might be easier to buy new bumpers that arent chrome and have them color matched

Metal chrome or chrome finish on plastic?

I tried to do this a while back. From what I remember you would have to blast the chrome off the metal parts then paint. Nobody around would mess with the plastic chrome. I priced out getting the bumpers blasted and painted then buying new painted plastics parts. The cost of everything was pretty expensive so it didn't justify doing it.

I did some four wheeler rims with flat black walmart spray paint. Turned out great.

You may want to research more though before doing a pick up truck bumper.

Chrome on the bumpers or chrome on the grill/plastic?

For the bumpers/metal parts I'd replace them with paintable bumpers, I bought work truck(XL) bumpers for mine and had them done and sold the chrome ones.

For the grill/plastic crap my painter was able to get the chrome coating sanded down and got the paint to stick, 4 years with no issues or flakes.

Metal parts I'd go with powder coating, plastic I'd go with Rustoleum plastic paint

This is your answer. Cheaper and easier than the alternatives and you can undo it if you change your mind or want to sell the truck.

Just keep the chrome...what kind of truck are we talking about?

We're going to need before pics before you mess this up.

Man don't you have grass to cut or something else to do? Gotta be something else to make a project out of.

use a red scotch brite pad and some Comet. "Wash" the hell out of it with pad and Comet to scuff the chrome. Go to your local parts store and get some etching primer. Put a good coat of primer on it and paint.

you shouldn't have made a hasty choice in buying the truck. As previously commented, plastidip is the winner here.
