First, I tried searching only saw a bunch of older threads.

Want to pick up one with all the shite going on and or possibly going to happen. I know best case scenario would be get one with a Honda engine and get the plug in deal put on the outside of the house.

No way that happens right now.... I'd prefer to keep it under 1k if not closer to $5-600 or so.

Guess I'm more worried about what to stay away from brand wise for portable lines.

That being said, my buddy has a piece of shite one that he hasn't started in 3yrs and it cranked on the first pull the other day!

Other buddy has one that came with a Honda engine and I couldn't get it cranked for the life of me.

Not seeing anything at the Home Depots... Other than what I would call "off brands". I know there are other local places that may have some. Just looking for some suggestions. I'm thinking 5000-5500? Just something for fans, fridge and tvs? Maybe a window unit at a later date?

You don't "need" to spend a bunch of money.

As many times as I use mine, I just use it to run the refrigerator off and on, the tv, and one window unit in a bedroom and maybe a light or two

I just suffer with the rest of the stuff not working.

Unless you have some nagging in-laws or something, you can do this for what you want to spend.

I'm sure someone here can tell you how to turn off your main breaker and backfeed it through tour dryer plug so you can run your whole house though. I'm not 100% confident so ill let them do that.

I have a Honda genset. Bought it about 7 years ago. Hell, I been using it a lot building a camp.

Have a easy 2000 running hours on it and it runs, starts like the day I bought it.

The Consumer Reports that came in the mail yesterday has the Generac RS7000E, Troy-Bilt XP7000 30477A, Briggs & Stratton 30470, Predator 68530, and Generac GP5500 5939 as their best buys. You might want to find a copy of the magazine. They all range from $600-$1,000. Honda was on top and the only one that is quiet, but it also costs 4x as much.

I'd look at Amazon to start with unless you need it now.

Amazon has a great price on a generator on their deal of the day today. Easily $100 cheaper than I've seen it anywhere else. That Wen is a nice unit comparable in performance and operation to the Honda EU2000s. Buy 2 and run them in parallel. Will be more flexible than a single larger unit. 3.2-4KW will be more that sufficient to run a fridge, TVs, and a couple of fans. Also gives you some redundancy if one goes down you always have the other.

FYI - during one storm About 6 years ago I bought a Honda 2000 watt that we also use for tailgating. It's great
We also bought an off brand 4500 watt that I literally bought off the back of a truck from some out of state guy in a parking lot.
Last week it started on the 1st pull after not being started in over a year (I know, shame on me).
My point is, you don't have to break the bank to get a generator that will serve your purpose.

Most any small gas motor will start after sitting for a while if you use clean gas and take care to drain the carbs dry before you store them. Doesn't matter how expensive the unit is if you leave gas in the carb and let the gas turn to varnish and gum up the carbs.

Forgive my ignorance on electricity..... What are you getting at with the running them parallel. Actually like the idea of having 2.

Briggs makes a good, cheap generator. I have a Generac 5500 that runs very well. Not sure the cost because I just inherited it since my parents leave every time something happens

Harbor Frieght has predator inverter generators for less than $400. The comparable Honda is $1000. If I were look to buy a couple, I would give those a hard look. That is a ton of savings.

Aren't the predator motors Honda clones? How bad could they be? I just glanced at them, but the reviews seemed pretty good.

It is, but It was $369 yesterday or Monday. Damn.

ETA: Doesn't look like you can parallel them either. Thatvwoukd be a deal breaker.

The crossover kit costs about $55, but even at full price (I can't get Amazon to add the deal of the day to my cart for some reason - I wanted to see if I could get 2 and the crossover to get a final price for the package to share) - you're around $1000 for 2 generators totaling 3200 steady and 4000 peak watts. That's not quite "standby" power, but that is a huge amount of backup capacity for a grand - that's for sure.

(ETA: They may have sold out of the Deal of the Day - even your link lists the regular price now - you have to search deal of the day, specifically, and I can't get them to go into the cart.)

You just combine the wattage Lets say your fridge needs 2200 watts to start then combining both will cover the needed wattage. With two separate 2000 watt generators you wouldn't be able to run that 2200 watt fridge unless you could run them in parallel.

That predator one at harbor freight that consumer reports recommends doesn't look like a bad deal, but that sum bitch weighs 200lbs and is 7000 watts and you have to buy a wheel kit as well.. May be a bit overkill. But it's only $500 and I think the wheel kit is like $30.

I have had the Ridgid 6800 generator for 3 years. No problems have surfaced and it will run my whole house. The engine is a Yamaha.
