Looking to learn how to weld for shits. I'm fairly certain my company will reimburse the cost as continuing education (somewhat related to my industry). Are there any independent or trade schools near Covington that offer this?

What kind of welding are you interested in?
There's probably an abc location near you.
Stick and mig are relatively easy to pick up, heliarc is a little more difficult.

This may or may not help you, but there was a LSU professor that use to teach welding and was a pretty good teacher from what I hear...
I believe his last name is kotchick?

I would assume Arc or MIG welding. Whichever is more practical to use in everyday life rather/general repairs rather than building structures.

Learn how to burn rods, if you can burn rods you'll be able to mig. If you really want to make money on the side learn how to tig.

Delgado might have something at one of their NS campuses

Yep combo welders make damn good money. But if he's just wanting to pick up welding as a hobby. Stick would probably be best IMO. No need to TIG just for shits and giggles.

Yeah but if your gonna do any sheet metal stuff as a hobby tig is better. If he's just sticking big chunks of metal together then yep stick is the way to go.

I decided to learn how to do this a few years ago. I got a Miller 140 Autoset from a client (it will plug into a 120v outlet), along with a tank, stand, gloves, wire, grinder and helmet.
I watched this video and then this video and then made this:
Then I made a couple of these for friends:
Then I sold the big green one and made me one of these:
Then I bought a Thermal Arc 186 tig welder and made this:
If you just want to learn how, buy a 140-180 amp mig welder (Lincoln, Miller or Thermal Arc) and get started. Mig welding is as easy as it gets. Tig takes some practice.

Did this with a Lincoln cracker box AC 225 and a bunch of E7018 rods.

I think my dad took the class, I also think they had it in Folsom/Covington.
I'll ask him, it was a few years ago though.

Hat's off to you stick burners. I'm not even going to try that until I have to. I do have an upcoming project with AlxTgr's offset if he ever pulls the trigger.

I learned stick before anything.
After you can burn rods, a mig welder is a like a glue gun with steel.
Learning how to weld aluminum has been the most useful.
