A few weeks ago I noticed weeds taking over parts of my yard. I know one is dollar weed and I think the second is Virginia button weed. Researched and determined they could be treated when the temps drop in a few weeks.
Noticed some patches of lawn turning brown and attributed it to the weeds.
Now I hear of the sod worm problem a lot of people are having, walk out in the yard and there are moths so I have both weeds & worms!
What should I tackle first? Not sure which is doing more damage and needs to be killed first.
Please help, not sure what to do to save my grass (St. Augustine). Almost an acre lot.

TIA

Lots of threads on this lately.

I think I've managed to knock the worms back, but the weeds are killing me. Have the exact same two you mentioned.

I've dropped Scott's bonus S on it twice and parts of it turned black and died and other parts were unaffected.

What did you use on the worms and how many applications did it take?

Suspend SC.

After first application in August, they disappeared for three weeks.

They came back recently and I treated last weekend when I mowed. Huge reduction in moths over the last week. I plan to treat again this weekend after I mow.

An agcenter guy on the OT said it might take 7-10 applications.

I also don't want to do a bunch of work killing them if my neighbors aren't doing the same. The moths will just fly back over and repopulate, so I'm thinking until we get a cool front to just keep at it so I can get the grass back in shape before it goes dormant.

Pisses me off bc I had a pristine yard of st aug and btw the worms and the weeds it looks like shite.

So, you are treating for both simultaneously? Had not thought about issues with neighbors not treating. I guess I will attack the sodworms and when it cools off go after the weeds. I appreciate your insight on this Engineer, hope I don't aggravate you with all my questions. Just the weed control had me concerned but adding the moths just added a complication I could have done without.

Yep.

Fair warning though, I have no idea what I'm doing.

The weeds are my biggest worry too. I didn't have a single weed in all of the front or back lawns before this and now they have taken over. I'm really hoping to have them under control before the winter so I don't have to deal with it in the spring.

Even if I manage to kill all the weeds, I'm afraid the grass isn't healthy enough to fill in those areas. I still have some dead spots from the first round of worms.

Anywhere that the river water flooded our area, there is a massive amount of weed intrusion. Also, a lot of Bahia has died. It's crazy

I could have made this exact same post

Its crazy how shitty my yard looks, it looked great last year and earlier in the year now it has gone to shite.

Very frustrating, I was pulling up the buttonweed, but its out of control now, so i'm just letting it go. I have large dead areas now as well which i think are due to sod worms, been seeing a ton of moths when i mow.

So whats the consensus? and i need to be walked through this...

I go to home depot and buy _______ and spray it on the yard ______ (this weekend, when it cools off, in the winter?) and repeat every ______ weeks

anyone want to fill in my blanks???

I threw out Ortho Bug B gone granules and it knocked the worms out quickly.

MSMA didn't do shite to the buttonweed in my yard but piss it off. I hit it with 2-4D though and about 80% of it shriveled up within a day. I have Bermuda btw in N MS.

When it comes to Virginia Buttonweed, you almost have to go out and check for them every day. In previously years, I've sprayed it, but this year I decided to go out and pull them up as soon as I see them (especially the little white flowers). It's an enormous pain in the arse. I have neighbors with huge chunks of Buttonweed all over the place, out of control.

Go buy some MSM. Or Celcius, Celsius is more expensive and msm does the same thing, you don't have to use very much

I have the perfect situation. My back yard is 99.7% weeds, but luckily it is swarmed with those worms/moths -- so they can just kill everything then I can start over.

I know what you mean. I'm scared to spray weeds because there's no grass left.

Dawn and water isn't much more than a way to bring worms/chinch bugs to the surface to gauge your infestation. Bifenthrin is your cheapest option to kill, but because it only kills that particular life cycle (worm) of the moth, it may take several applications to get things under control. As far as buttonweed, it's too late to worry about it. Let it run its course and kill it in the spring

Best luck ever- I started to have the sod webworm problem, then a
flock of juvenile white ibis showed up- bout thirty of them went to work on the worms every day, all day for about a week- voila! Looks like the worms are all gone.

I'm having a weed problem too. Mine is choking out my grass above the septic tank. No idea what it is. It almost looks like a small shrub. It was very hard to pull up.
